I worked at San Mateo Credit Union

    Pros

The people are great to work with, and go out of their way to help each other. The benefits are good and they really try to acknowledge people for their achievements and tenure. The company shows they do value their employees.

    Cons

Although the company is not too small, it seems to be a little cliquey and political. Also they do promote employee growth, but need more advancement opportunities in all positions.

    I truly enjoyed my job

I worked at San Mateo Credit Union

    Pros

They have great employee benefits .. pay very well

    Cons

There is a hierarchy that is very hard if not impossible to break into. The positions there are never very stable. They completely practice "at-will-employer" and let employees go for some of the silliest reasons after many years of great service. They tell you to basically give the shirt off your back to please a member in one breath, and when you do, they find fault with it and fire you in the next.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop passing employees from one department to another, when they can't cut the mustard. You are only retaining problems and putting them on another managers team for them to have to deal with.

I have been working at San Mateo Credit Union full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Competitive salaries; nice atmosphere; CEO really cares about the employees' well being.

    Cons

The credit union as an industry always lags (in terms of technology) the banking industry as a whole. So, if you're looking the latest and greatest tools available, again in terms of technology, this is not your place. Complacency can kick in since you don't really risk losing your job unless you do something really wrong.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less focus on third party/vendor products and incentivize internal staff to improvise and create business solutions internally. If the staff doesn't have the skills or know-how, make it part of their professional goals. Current mandatory training is genetic and only serves the front line - not the professional staff working behind the scenes.
