I worked at Sandvik Mining and Construction full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The company treated their employees well and the pay was good.

    Cons

    The long time managers/employees.
No way to report management without being retaliated against.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop treating the long term employees as if they were golden. Listen to the newer employees...you may learn that your long term employees are not conducting business in a manner that is cohesive with your vision.

I have been working at Sandvik Mining and Construction full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Sandvik Mining and Construction is no longer the name. Mining and Construction were split.
Active in many countries, very international, with many good people and a (still) good reputation among customers.

    Cons

Sandvik Mining (which I am reviewing now) has gone through many changes since 2011. A total of 4 division wide and department restructures/reorganizations within not even 36 months. Changes were necessary due to a drop in the market, but implemented poorly (the top level management would likely disagree with that comment!).
SMC used to be a place of discourse and input. That is gone entirely. Now if you don't pull the company line you are not a team player. Any input brought forward that is meant to challenge the status quo is seen as negativity and disregarded. People that are retrenched are treated badly. Many colleagues with 30+ years of experience and customer relationships have either walked out the door on their own terms or have been let go.
New president appointed and started. The incumbent president demoted and left in the organization.... In which international company would that happen?
Due to the numerous reorganizations, career paths have faded or been eliminated. upwards mobility is a huge challenge now. Managers change every 6 - 12 months. Absolutely no stability. Needless to say not a "fun place to work"!
Employee training and competence development has stopped entirely.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The mistakes that were made (and they are many!) will have their effects and results. Internal problems have reached customer ears and will have an impact on purchase decisions. While other industrial companies have long recognized the importance of service, Sandvik Mining still thinks selling machines is business model.
Hopefully the new President for Sandvik Mining can turn the ship and bring back a culture of listening to the base and developing the base, not just a culture of "looking after my mates" on the top floor.

I worked at Sandvik Mining and Construction full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great people working there. Benefits were really good, especially 401K. Upper management was honest about state of company.

    Cons

Did not challenge engineers, engineering department was fully concentrated on completing hard to meet deadlines and could have done better job of developing engineers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management from different departments need to work together to resolve issue instead of fighting over who's fault it is.

I have been working at Sandvik Mining and Construction full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Best to have Mining or Construction back ground in order to excel with this company. Having a strong mentor within Sandvik will definately help your chances to move up with this company.

    Cons

ERP system and fragmented systems make a simple task much more complicated than what it should be. Customer is suppose to be number one but internal staff make it difficult to do that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't look for outside of industry candidates. You and they will be frustrated. Reduce the number of layers it takes in order to get an answer. Look at ERP systems that other companies use with ann open mind. You do not have the best systems.

Demoralizing place to work - happy to leave.

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Houston, TX

I worked at Sandvik Mining and Construction

    Pros

International travel (1-2 weeks per month) which is great if you don't have a family
Benefits are OK for older employees close to retirement age
In Sweden they offer very good benefits (18 months maternity and some paternity leave). This is not the case outside Sweden though.

    Cons

The best jobs are in the head office (Sweden) and are protected by management at the expense of every other country..
There is no culture of accountability - if you do a good job, you are not rewarded, if you don't you get to hang around for eternity relying on everybody else to carry you.
Management is completely disengaged from the realities of the mining business
Very strong corporate culture forces everybody to march like lemmings off a cliff
    Poor pay
    Demoralized workforce

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

4 consecutive quarterly losses, the layoff of 6000 employees and the closure of 18 manufacturing facilities in 2009 should be enough for management to realize that the decisions that have been taken (governance model, HR practices, consolidation of engineering etc) have had a negative effect. Groupthink is in full effect. Wake up, the rest of the world won't keep working hard so that those in Sandviken never have to. Sandvik rewards mediocrity and punishes intitiative. Look around at what you are creating.
