I have been working at Santa Clara University full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Beautiful campus. Polite students. Supportive faculty. Moderate support of research in terms of funds. Close community. If you are able to do some research, and not dedicate too much time to all of the possible service opportunities, you can have a nice work/life balance. Family friendly university.

    Cons

No graduate students. The university does not require, or reward, excellence. Many very intelligent faculty have a great deal of time on their hands to be concerned with committees, faculty senate, and student evaluations of teaching. This is fine, but there isn't always the social support to enable strong research because the culture demands a great deal of service. Also, this salaries within the College of Arts and Sciences are low, especially considering the extremely high cost of living in the Silicon Valley right now.

    Pros

People are generally very easy to work and are always eager to help others. Very good work/life balance and benefits

    Cons

Opportunities for upward mobility are generally pretty hard to come by and most managers or directors have generally been there awhile

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider keeping mobility channels open and evaluating employeess

I worked at Santa Clara University full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Post-secondary environment, intellectually advanced company and friendly coworkers and immediate colleagues. Chairs and 3rd floor couches on outside patio of the library make for lovely luncheon nap spots. Gorgeous campus, stimulating events calendars, and flavorful, cheap, and student-free eats at the Adobe Lodge.

    Cons

The air of mystery and drawn-out tension that upper management employed to mask ongoing early retirement program restructuring options for numerous departmental staff and programs created an atmosphere of tension, suspicion, and resentment among staff, who felt as though they constantly had to defend their jobs and

I have been working at Santa Clara University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

SCU provides staff with a community to call home, rather than just a place to work. People really do care about one another.

    Cons

Salary and growth potential. Salaries are low compared to those available in Silicon Valley and there is very little growth, if any at all.

  7.

I worked at Santa Clara University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The campus is a close-knit community full of friendly individuals. Occasional off campus get togethers for staff to bond and be rewarded for their hard work. Work life based on the core values of the university: competence, conscience, and compassion.

    Cons

Depending on what department you join upward mobility is limited. Working at Santa Clara University you will realize that the school is mainly focused on revenue, it is a business first and school second. Raises are capped at a standard increase per year based on whether or not specific criteria has been met rather than a review of merit.

    Pros

To get an engineering degree at a school that strongly intertwines technical education with global perspective, social justice, and ethics is truly amazing. To work under professors that live by these codes is a double win. Particularly at campus ministry, they extol these values and encourage involvement of students from all backgrounds and degrees. I personally loved the work dynamic. People got things done, but there was a sense of joy and satisfaction in their work.

    Cons

The campus ministry office gets really busy during religious holidays.

    Pros

It's great interacting with people on the regular, and being of service to them. A fun and stimulating work environment to come in to.

    Cons

This is the best student job on campus, so there are few cons to the position. Wage could be increased for students who have worked there for multiple years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on the Pathway requirement. Even still, nobody takes it seriously.
