I have been working at Santa Clara Valley Water as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

Great internship program. I learned a lot in the year and a half I've been here. The engineers in my unit work hard and teach a lot.

    Cons

There are no chances to grow as a professional. Once your internship is over, you are done. They do not offer full time positions even if you've been here a while and they supposedly like you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please consider your hard working interns for full time positions.

It was an interesting opportunity with little promise of a future.

I have been working at Santa Clara Valley Water full-time

    Pros

If you can secure one of the 731 allocated full-time employee slots you are in for a stable future with the District.

    Cons

However, these 731 slots are prized and highly sought after. For the first Entry-level Biologist I position that was opened to external applications there were over 250 applicants for that single position. So good luck....

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop stifling your staff and give them opportunities to think outside of the rigid box that you force them to work inside.

Big, bloated, top-heavy, mismanaged public agency...

I worked at Santa Clara Valley Water full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Salary (for my position), excellent health and retirement benefits, decent boss.

    Cons

Cube farm. Very political, with lots of rumors, gossip, back-stabbing, buck-passing, etc. Bureaucratic hell. Bloated, with lots of dead weight and very few stars. Nobody seems happy to be there. Lots of "silos".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees with respect. Put the right people in the right positions. Deal with problem employees appropriately (i.e. get rid of the dead weight). Recognize and reward those who excel. Do your job.

I worked at Santa Clara Valley Water as an intern (more than 3 years)

    Pros

While working for the H2O district I experienced working with a number of passionate colleagues. The pay was great, medical benefits, flexible scheduling all made for a great work environment.

    Cons

Water district is always under public scrutiny. The company is frequently reorganizing and moving people around. Board of directors role in salary/ benefits, somehow always seem to increase their own pay....

I worked at Santa Clara Valley Water as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Everyone is extremely nice. Learn about the different aspects of working at the company, and not just bottle necked in the assigned department. Lots of freedom.

    Cons

Is a little bit un organized. Quality of internship is highly dependent on specific manager.

I worked at Santa Clara Valley Water full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Nice physical working environment and good co-workers

    Cons

Terrible management, employees not treated with respect. Qualified employees are not given opportunity to advance. Initiative is not rewarded, and in fact, is discouraged. Most of the workers I knew were just plodding along, putting in their time until retirement. Morale was the worst I have ever encountered in over 40 years of professional work experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realize that your employees are your greatest asset. They are human beings also, needing to feel what they do matters, that their input is wanted and values, and that if they work hard and prepare, there will be a career path forward. Look for ways to utilize the talents and aspirations of your employees.

I worked at Santa Clara Valley Water part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Plenty of interesting and cutting edge work, with a great staff and management. Beautiful location and wonderful facilities.

    Cons

I was there on a contract basis that was limited to 960 hours per year, and HR refused to extend it as I was a former CalPERS employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the great work, and change the ruling at HR so I can continue to work there.
