    Pros

    Nice people, good working conditions.

    Cons

960 hour limit per FY per contractor.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the 960 hour hour per fiscal year contractor rule and allow good employees to role over to a perm position.

  6. No growth possible from internship and EXTREMELY CHILDISH FULL TIME EMPLOYEES - AVOID IF POSSIBLE

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Santa Clara Valley Water as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent intern/temp pay but this is how they get you

    Cons

The full time employees look down on the temps and interns. Avoid if possible. They will judge you and listen to your conversations through their cubicles. I have worked here for over a year, the full time employees do their best to do no work and have intern/temps do all their work. AVOID AT ALL COSTS IF YOU CAN!

    Advice to Management

Management needs to be able to fire those inept and petty full timers!

I have been working at Santa Clara Valley Water full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    friendly, great benefits, nice location.

    Cons

promotion are done by tenure not skills, bias tends to run rampant.

    Advice to Management

The District and its mission are critical to the health of Santa Clara County. Therefore, the District should give more attention to stomping-out internal Bureaucracy and power struggles.

I have been working at Santa Clara Valley Water full-time

    Pros

If you can secure one of the 731 allocated full-time employee slots you are in for a stable future with the District.

    Cons

However, these 731 slots are prized and highly sought after. For the first Entry-level Biologist I position that was opened to external applications there were over 250 applicants for that single position. So good luck....

    Advice to Management

Stop stifling your staff and give them opportunities to think outside of the rigid box that you force them to work inside.

I have been working at Santa Clara Valley Water as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Great internship program. I learned a lot in the year and a half I've been here. The engineers in my unit work hard and teach a lot.

    Cons

There are no chances to grow as a professional. Once your internship is over, you are done. They do not offer full time positions even if you've been here a while and they supposedly like you.

    Advice to Management

Please consider your hard working interns for full time positions.

I worked at Santa Clara Valley Water full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Salary (for my position), excellent health and retirement benefits, decent boss.

    Cons

Cube farm. Very political, with lots of rumors, gossip, back-stabbing, buck-passing, etc. Bureaucratic hell. Bloated, with lots of dead weight and very few stars. Nobody seems happy to be there. Lots of "silos".

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees with respect. Put the right people in the right positions. Deal with problem employees appropriately (i.e. get rid of the dead weight). Recognize and reward those who excel. Do your job.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Santa Clara Valley Water as an intern (More than 3 years)

    Pros

While working for the H2O district I experienced working with a number of passionate colleagues. The pay was great, medical benefits, flexible scheduling all made for a great work environment.

    Cons

Water district is always under public scrutiny. The company is frequently reorganizing and moving people around. Board of directors role in salary/ benefits, somehow always seem to increase their own pay....
