I worked at Santa Fe College part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great supervisors, excellent support, and really engaged students from all walks of life. I felt my teaching was supported by faculty even though I served as an adjunct.

    Cons

Adjunct pay is fairly low, but this is par the course with adjunct salaries at institutions. However, schedules were flexible and class sizes were small.

    Very Pro Student College

I have been working at Santa Fe College as a contractor (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    - The entire vibe of the school is casual and student conscious
    - Wide variety of students
    - Top 10 school amongst community colleges in the nation
    - Pro active and always expanding opportunities for students
    - Software to teach is always up to date

    Cons

    - Adjuncts are used like full time staff/faculty which leads to some inconsistency in the way a department curriculum flows.
    - No benefits for adjuncts nor pay for office hours (which are required)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay adjuncts better and hire more of them as full time staff to improve the quality of learning for students.

I have been working at Santa Fe College as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

Pay is standard for most positions. Leadership is great, very few moments where 'it' hits the fan. All of the staff are friendly and eager to help.

    Cons

Not many I can think of. Perhaps the only complaint is that you are often reminded that Santa Fe is a public college and doesn't often have the same resources as places like UF. But they are trying.

I have been working at Santa Fe College part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

At least in Social and Behavioral Sciences, adjunct faculty are treated with respect on an interpersonal level and professional support is good, especially in terms of engaging 'problem' students. The student body is wonderfully diverse, and over time you can get a decent ratio of glad-to-have-them to hope-my-poker-face-is-holding students.

    Cons

Pay is very low given the large labor pool fed by UF grad students, trailing academic spouses, and working retirees. This, combined with a fluctuating enrollment level, means it is very hard to get a stable workload in many departments. Your load for a given semester can depend very heavily on luck of the draw when it comes to class times, popularity of particular courses, and current enrollment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The size of the administration might still be too large for the college's needs. Given the very large share of the course load carried by adjuncts, the student body would be better-served if the college developed employee roles similar to Lecturers at UF--basically some non-tenure-track positions that were either full-time or at least were guaranteed a minimum load before assignments were given to adjuncts.

    Pros

It's a place where you can become an integral part of the environment. It gets in your blood.

    Cons

It is still an institution and as with most institutions change is slow.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Santa Fe College part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great staff--especially the English department. Friendly colleagues. Good technical support in classrooms. Excellent facilities. Santa Fe is a really wonderful place to work, with students who actually want to learn--the student body is also incredibly diverse, which is rare and rewarding.

    Cons

Adjunct pay is average at best, and with the Affordable Care Act, Adjunct classes per semester are now limited, which is unfortunate.
