I worked at Santa Monica Malibu School District full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Teaching at SMASH has been one of the greatest experiences I've ever had. The community (both staff and families) are thoughtful, progressive people.

    --Amazing professional development opportunities

    --Students' interests valued

--Thoughtful inquiry based discussions of best practices

    --No fear of change!

    --Authentic at its core

    Cons

With teacher-created curriculum and authentic, narrative assessments, the time put in went well past school hours.

Hard to achieve a balance between home/work life.

Very committed people will be challenged to find this balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Excellent, dedicated leadership. Kudos!

    Pros

The company pays decent and has great benefits. Gives you a sense of purpose. Special Education has good job security.

    Cons

inconsistent management who sometimes doesn't know what to do or how to handle certain situations. Doesn't consider suggestions from staff who are actually working with the children. High turn over in aide positions so they are mostly always understaffed. They want you to go above and beyond but it's not reciprocated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take and ask staff for suggestions to make things run more smoothly. They mostly know what's happening. If you want your staff to do more to help give your staff more support and recognition.

    Pros

Pay is pretty good for a part time job. You get health benefits if you work more than 4 hours a day. It's rewarding and challenging.

    Cons

It's only 9 months a year and you don't get unemployment in the summer. You love them but sometimes the kids have serious behavior problems and parents are not always sane.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I appreciate my job tremendously and at my school you are doing an excellent job!
