I have been working at Schaefer Systems full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible schedule allows a work-life balance. Schaefer is family-friendly and welcomes employees in a relaxed environment. No micro-management as long as you meet your deadlines. - 401k match, vacation days, personal days, employee events, HRA, continuing education for new software or professional licenses paid by employer - Management has an open door policy. Input and new ideas are appreciated. - Multi-cultural environment, good collaboration between employees and divisions.

    Cons

As with every international company, the collaboration with sister companies can be challenging at times.

    Advice to Management

Collaboration between divisions may still be improved. Continue to show employee appreciation.

    Pros

Compensation will increase overtime if good work is done. Time off is flexible. The company does things such as have parties, buy good coffee, etc. to improve moral. Also there are domestic and international opportunities available.

    Cons

Basic expectations were not always clear. SSI can benefit from having a more structured training.

    Advice to Management

Upper management should focus more on developing and growing the company through employee retention.

I have been working at Schaefer Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Very family oriented - Relaxed environment - 401K match - Benefits & paid holidays - Privately owned - Office lunches randomly throughout the year. - Not a micromanaged group, as long as your work is done correctly no one bothers you or stands over your shoulder.

    Cons

    - Barriers between divisions/departments but those are beginning to get smaller with the new CFO. - Some employees (including some management) have been with the company for so long they are hesitant to any change.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid to let your employees advance within your division or company. Continue to support growth not only in your own department but in other departments as well. Continue to keep the small family office atmosphere as we grow, never lose touch of where we started.

    Pros

The upside is fantastic. So much potential and it is there to go get. You can work as much as you want to achieve your goals.

    Cons

If you are not in line with middle management, it is impossible to move anything forward. Even with proof what needs to be done, middle management does not follow through with short and long term visions.

    Advice to Management

Just because you put someone in charge does not mean they actually know what to be done in that division. You need to actually to decide what you want to be.

I have been working at Schaefer Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Compensation, while starting low, has increased with my promotions. The company still has a ways to go regarding this. Time off is very flexible. The company also does little things such as parties, has a good coffee/tea selection, etc.

    Cons

If working on a new project, the amount of hours required can be intense.

    Advice to Management

Right the ship a bit on salaries - get them up to date. Keep treating us well otherwise.

I worked at Schaefer Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

SSI knows the automation industry and designs well-functioning warehouses. They are flexible with schedule and put trust in the employee to manage their time wisely. Well established support system for software developers and can be pointed in the right direction to get help if needed. The benefits offered were good and HR were looking at ways to make it better. Tools offered to software developers were great tools that work well in software development atmosphere.

    Cons

Basic expectations were not always clear and a clear start-to-finish on a task wasn't defined regarding roles/responsibilities when they crossed departments.

    Advice to Management

SSI could benefit from setting up structured career path for advancement within the company as well as setting up structured training to help with that advancement instead of the employee learning from experience as its happening. The hand off between departments can be cleaner with proper roles and responsibilities defined.

I worked at Schaefer Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Innovation: SSI Schaefer is an engineering company at heart. Change is a constant at SSI and products are re-imagined every 6-8 months. In my 5 years at SSI, I have seen many iterations of product development with aggressive goals. This pace of product development leaves engineering with a constant flow of challenges requiring innovative engineering solutions. No matter where you are in the organization there is constant need to develop new skills and think of continuous improvement opportunities. This is a dream employer for someone who enjoyed automation, technology, and technical challenges. Comp. and Benefits: SSI tries to stay competitive with other automation OEMs. The total comp. package is pretty good if you factor in benefits, training investments, and work atmosphere. SSI’s merit and incentive plans are based on pay-for-performance. If you are an A player who works to develop their skills and delivers solid performance then you will be well compensated for it. Development and Growth: When I was still at SSI, growth was mostly based on stretch roles. People with high growth potential and willingness to take on challenges are offered additional responsibilities and promotions. If you are an independent self-starter individual who seeks a challenging and satisfying work environment, then you will be successful. In a Nutshell: I had a challenging and satisfying job, felt a sense of accomplishment at the end of each day, met a lot of cool people, learned a lot of technical and soft skills, and got paid well enough to have a good life.

    Cons

SSI can benefit from having a more structured training and also better operator manuals.

    Pros

Enjoyable work with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Exposure to interesting technologies and software, and a chance to work with talented and helpful people. Opportunity to travel overseas for work with European colleagues. Training (software products) was professional and top-notch. Felt my work and contribution was valued and appreciated. Worked with and for a lot of good people both in the U.S. and abroad with whom I founded lasting friendships. Other pros: 401k match with immediate vesting, medical HRA, holiday schedule.

    Cons

Financial compensation could always be better, but the benefits package and a superior work/life balance helps to offset.

    Advice to Management

Continue to implement plans for breaking down the barriers to smooth cooperation between the divisions.
