I have been working at Schaefer Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Compensation, while starting low, has increased with my promotions. The company still has a ways to go regarding this. Time off is very flexible. The company also does little things such as parties, has a good coffee/tea selection, etc.

    Cons

If working on a new project, the amount of hours required can be intense.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Right the ship a bit on salaries - get them up to date. Keep treating us well otherwise.

    Pros

International opportunities, decent pay, and relaxed environment.

    Cons

Ambiguity between international offices and poor coordination of processes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management should focus more on strategically developing and growing the company through retainage of employees.

    Pros

SSI knows the automation industry and designs well-functioning warehouses. They are flexible with schedule and put trust in the employee to manage their time wisely. Well established support system for software developers and can be pointed in the right direction to get help if needed. The benefits offered were good and HR were looking at ways to make it better. Tools offered to software developers were great tools that work well in software development atmosphere.

    Cons

Basic expectations were not always clear and a clear start-to-finish on a task wasn't defined regarding roles/responsibilities when they crossed departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

SSI could benefit from setting up structured career path for advancement within the company as well as setting up structured training to help with that advancement instead of the employee learning from experience as its happening. The hand off between departments can be cleaner with proper roles and responsibilities defined.

I worked at Schaefer Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Innovation:
SSI Schaefer is an engineering company at heart. Change is a constant at SSI and products are re-imagined every 6-8 months. In my 5 years at SSI, I have seen many iterations of product development with aggressive goals. This pace of product development leaves engineering with a constant flow of challenges requiring innovative engineering solutions. No matter where you are in the organization there is constant need to develop new skills and think of continuous improvement opportunities. This is a dream employer for someone who enjoyed automation, technology, and technical challenges.

    Comp. and Benefits:
SSI tries to stay competitive with other automation OEMs. The total comp. package is pretty good if you factor in benefits, training investments, and work atmosphere. SSI’s merit and incentive plans are based on pay-for-performance. If you are an A player who works to develop their skills and delivers solid performance then you will be well compensated for it.

    Development and Growth:
When I was still at SSI, growth was mostly based on stretch roles. People with high growth potential and willingness to take on challenges are offered additional responsibilities and promotions. If you are an independent self-starter individual who seeks a challenging and satisfying work environment, then you will be successful.

    In a Nutshell:
I had a challenging and satisfying job, felt a sense of accomplishment at the end of each day, met a lot of cool people, learned a lot of technical and soft skills, and got paid well enough to have a good life.

    Cons

SSI can benefit from having a more structured training and also better operator manuals.

    Pros

Enjoyable work with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Exposure to interesting technologies and software, and a chance to work with talented and helpful people. Opportunity to travel overseas for work with European colleagues. Training (software products) was professional and top-notch.

Felt my work and contribution was valued and appreciated. Worked with and for a lot of good people both in the U.S. and abroad with whom I founded lasting friendships.

Other pros: 401k match with immediate vesting, medical HRA, holiday schedule.

    Cons

Financial compensation could always be better, but the benefits package and a superior work/life balance helps to offset.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to implement plans for breaking down the barriers to smooth cooperation between the divisions.

    Pros

Many neat, one of kind technologies. Most content manufactured in house.

    Cons

The neat, one of kind technologies are not accessible to most companies (even the large ones) due to initial and residual expense to maintain. Most don't see an ROI so tough to sell.
Management is dysfunctional and yet arrogant. Borders on beng a hostile workplace in the US.
German engineering is king here. The company does not really like or respect sales and marketing. Both are underpaid compared to the industry. US engineers must absolutely defer to European counterparts.
Recent mass exodus of project management, engineering and sales professionals will most likely have a very negative effect on long-term growth.
Schaefer has a true cultural problem.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Replace all German/European management in North America with US- based executives with experience in this market. Schaefer has missed the mark in this market for years except for a few isolated successes.

    Pros

Work your own hours is nice sometime

    Cons

Pay is not good. B.S you too much on pay compare to other company who's straight forward.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Benefits are't bad. That's about the only thing that is good at Schaefer.

    Cons

    Being an American.
    Not being European.
People there automatically think you are stupid.
Management has no clue how to run a business.
    Extremely high employee churn.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Americans aren't stupid. People from the US could add a lot to the company, IF you'd let them. You'll be out of business in a few years.

I have been working at Schaefer Systems

    Pros

Schaefer provides excellent insurance and retirement benefits. There is a lot of opportunity for people who have the ability to make their own way and can work well without structure.

    Cons

Divisions in the company could benefit from better communications between the division leaders and then sharing a forecasted vision with employees. This would help employees make better decisions in their daily work.

I have been working at Schaefer Systems

    Pros

No parking deck fees. Location is good. Some co-workers are great, other are very negative and rude. management takes advantage of not being on the clock.

    Cons

Little to no communication between divisions - everything is a "secret". female employees are not heard for any reason. Some managers take advantage of "free" freight and storage of personal items.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate!!!! treat employees as you would like to be treated. Think about your family members working here, would you treat them like that?
