Research scientist in one of the applied research departments

Principal Research Scientist (Former Employee)
Cambridge, MA

I worked at Schlumberger full-time

ProsSDR gives its scientists access to excellent research resources. They are provided with a fair amount of latitude to explore topics of interest to them, but the results are evaluated critically in terms of successful migration into new oil field measurement tools. To succeed in the organization, the research needs to eventually lead to new revenue for the company.

ConsSDR is biased towards physical scientists and away from engineers. Engineers have much more support in Sugar Land.

Great company for those who enjoy collaboration, wide-ranging challenges

Principal Scientist (Current Employee)
Cambridge, MA

I have been working at Schlumberger full-time for more than 8 years

ProsStrong belief in technology.
Lots of young energetic colleagues.
International opportunities.
Colleagues are very diverse.
Strong belief in merit.

ConsLike many oilfield companies, facing issues with bimodal age distribution.
Have to get used to paying attention to one's own career.

Good intern experience

Intern (Former Employee)
Boston, MA

I worked at Schlumberger as an intern for less than a year

ProsI worked in the research division. And it was a very good work experience. Flexible schedule, freedom to choose your own research path, good interaction with boss, problem oriented work with a good sense of direction... Loved the internship! Good pay too.

ConsComing from a math background, there weren't too many colleagues in the same field. Most other interns worked in labs.

A great company to spend the Summer with as an intern. And a better place to make a career afterwards.

Intern (Former Employee)
Cambridge, MA

I worked at Schlumberger as an intern for less than a year

ProsIf you intern here it will open so many doors for you afterwards. Schlumberger interns are highly valued in the field and having it on your resume and a strong rec. is extremely valuable.

ConsThere is a significant crunch period previous to finishing. Although that may be group specific.

Research Engineering Intern

Research Engineer (Former Employee)
Cambridge, MA

I worked at Schlumberger as an intern for less than a year

Prosgood salary, good working environment, flexible, managers are nice, location is one of the best, cutting-edge technology, popular in the field.

Conseveryone works hard, some work during the weekend, not lots of fun. But it's typical for R&D, you need to do intern multiple times to get a return offer. Someone has connections does not need to do it.

Great employee but could be managed better.

Research Scientist (Former Employee)
Cambridge, MA

I worked at Schlumberger full-time for more than a year

Pros1. In general, very smart colleagues to work with.
2. Working environment is excellent, individual office.
3. Lots of seminars and talks if one want to broaden ones horizon.

Cons1. The pay is very average and pay raise may be stagnant because of the training program Advance.
2. A lot of side-activities, such as training or metier learning and use lots of working time.
3. Transfer policies makes it hard for employees with families.
4. Your career is totally in the control of your manager.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe transfer policy bothers a lot of employees. The management should move those who are willing to move and leave those who are not mobile. Don't make people feel like they have to move.

The training and learning process is more than necessary.
