If you care about money, and don't care about having a life, this is the place to be. Otherwise, get employed elsewhere.

Schlumberger, a good company to work for, with some small problems.

Field Engineer (Current Employee)
Williston, ND

I have been working at Schlumberger

ProsSchlumberger is one of those companies where everyone in management started at the bottom and worked their way up. You know that your boss went through the same things that you went through when they started out. Schlumberger is also very respected in the oilfield. You do not have to be embarassed when you tell people where you work, you can be proud to say "I work for Schlumberger." It also has a wonderful development program for new employee's. This program promotes team work and mentoring which help to build a stronger working group.

ConsThere are problems with middle management levels, especially at the FSM and District Manager levels. District Managers are allowed to run their offices as if they were God, and are allowed to make their own policies at whim. Schlumberger claim's that they have a no blame culture, but this is not true. Manager's do not want you to report incidents because this will affect their end of the year bounuses. Also not all employee's are treated the same. Employee's in some departments are treated a lot better than other departments. This is true not just at one district, but at most districts.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou should treat your employee's equally. Just because the Frac department makes more money, does not mean that they are doing the most work and putting in the most hours. Everyone in the company is working hard, and they should all be rewarded equally.

Schlumberger D&M

Snr. LWD Field Engineer (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at Schlumberger

ProsOpportunity to earn good money with days off the Rigs to spend with family. As Oil is booming so are service company's like Schlumberger, so for the mid term the future is bright.

ConsMany line managers were poor as a field hand and thus moved into the office. They now forget what life is like in the field and micro manage their numbers instead of being good with the people who are actually generating the revenue for the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop hiring Directional Drillers from outside the company and promote from within. Pay more to Field Engineers and respect more their family life and time off.

Many opportunities for those willing to work hard for them.

Field Engineer (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at Schlumberger

ProsSchluberger is a challenging, aggresive company. You learn a lot, you are pushed to the edge, you try to go the extra mile. In terms of learning an experience it is a fantastic place to work as a first job. You can change jobs and location every 2-3 years. A truly multicultural and multinational environment.

ConsSometimes it just becomes too much. Too much work, too much pressure, to little time for yourself. The focus is too much on short term profits, at the cost of life / work balance. The company is constantly loosing lots of tallented people who get better deals from oil companies.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou need to do a better job at balancing profits with product quality and work/life balance for employees. I know it's tough - but the company needs it for long term success.

Good oil field company to start out at.

Field Engineer (Former Employee)
Fort Smith, AR

I worked at Schlumberger

ProsGood pay package. The company rewards hard work, and if you're willing to put the extra effort and hours, you will make a lot more money. Field engineers tend to make a % of the work done on top of their base salaries, so you can get rich fairly quickly. Training is pretty good too.

ConsWork-life balance is not the greatest. Hours can be unusual. Locations are horrible, unless you enjoy living in the middle of no where.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay attention to the younger engineers. Does it make sense that you hire hundreds a year, only to see over 50% leave in less than two years?

Schlumberger promotes a culture of mutual respect and autonomy.

Program Manager (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at Schlumberger

ProsSchlumberger employees are given a high level of responsibility and autonomy from the beginning. Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) management processes are unparalleled in the industry. There is a long standing culture of diversity and excellent opportunities for women. Schlumberger offers excellent benefits and family support. The organization is filled with knowledgeable employees, has ample opportunities for learning, and excellent knowledge sharing tools in use. It is a global organization, offering plenty of opportunity for changing one's profession or location.

ConsNone in my experience. Many people in the company work long hours, but there is a high level of dedication to the job and to the customer.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue. The employee base is loyal, innovative and hardworking.

Great international travel, exposure; combined with overworked field and tech center folks

Research & Development Intern, Houston (Former Employee)
Houston, TX

I worked at Schlumberger

ProsInternational exposure is bar none; the training is excellent; and the calibre of people you meet is never failed to amaze me.

ConsBrutal hours and the type of work is often random and sporadic. As a junior, it is very dependent on the quality of the manager since he can make or mar your time there. This is more than evident since a high-flyer will take you along and teach you a lot and a sedentary mule is going to make you insane with boredom.
Lack of choice on progression of juniors - you have to put your time in at each level and no real performance evaluation benefits; global locations can include undesirable ones

Advice to Senior ManagementBecome more responsive to juniors needs; hire people into interesting roles in interesting places based on their interest somewhat and a joint needs basis, not purely on need.

Great company, but problems with middle management.

Senior Design Engineer (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at Schlumberger

ProsThe Job Opportunities and Challenges presented are tremendous. They have a good benefits package for their employees too, which is incentive enough to work for the organization.

ConsIn one word .. Middle Management. The mid management team comprises mostly of people who have considerable engineering experience with the company. On the other hand, they lack the basic management and team building skills that are essential for the organization to grow.

Schlumberger's training program, although robust, fails to account for training these "engineers" as managers.

Advice to Senior ManagementTraining, training, training.... this is what is going to keep your organization growing. Middle management is in serious need of an overhaul.
