Pros
Career Opportunities and money, growth prospects and job reputation. In general, only applicants with a major in electrical engineering are hired by Schlumberger. The turnover rate for wireline engineers is very high and demand for them is also very high, so Schlumberger may be hiring people with other types of engineering degrees. Schlumberger is a reputable organisation, which is something that will only assist you in getting further employment (it’s like coming from a Big4 background, it’s very highly sought after, employers just assume you’re a good employee).
Cons
No personal life, no time for friends and family
Advice to Senior Management
Speed up recruitment to joining period.
Pros
Schlumberger offers its engineers a good starting salary, a great culture at workplace and international exposure. Structured growth path for engineers for the first three years is next only to hand holding. Mentors and managers are accountable for success of new recruits. Attrition is carefully monitored. All these make Schlumberger a good first job.
Those who stay long term are rewarded with generous deferred benefits.
Organizations does not haver many layers and visibility is good visibility.
The fact that almost all upper management were at some time a field engineer in the company makes it easy to connect to them.
Cons
Drilling does not happen in champ de elysee. Expect to travel and work in all kinds of places. Work hours tough on the rig, worse in office.
Salary growth is slow between 5-15 years. By then one shoud ideally be getting significant stock options.
Advice to Senior Management
Time to re-look at the work life balance benchmarks in the industry. Compensations revision to increase the cash/bonus components is also required.
Pros
Training programme is really good for new hires. Its a little intense but worth it.
Employees are usually exposed to new environments and challenges.
Learning the ability to work and perform under pressure.
Fairness in promotion. I think Schlumberger does not discriminate at all in the promotion of its employees.
Cons
Very bad work/life balance. (Field and office work). Since the work is tough, a lot of time is expected to be spent on work. This usually in the long run has adverse effects on the employees personal life.
Employee morale is also sometimes low due to lack of recognition of work well done.
Advice to Senior Management
- Compensation is no more as attractive as it used to be. Hence the losing of really experienced people.
