I worked at Schlumberger as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company pays quiet well no matter what you actually end up doing. All interns get a fixed bi-weekly salary. Schlumberger engineers seemed to be happy to talk about their past experiences when they were in the field and help out with any projects you have been assigned. Lots of free time to read. Most other Interns had good experiences out on the rigs.

    Cons

Sadly I was one of the very few who did not get the actual "Field Engineer" experience. Spent all my time in either a warehouse prepping down hole equipment for shipment (no maintenance just boxing and paperwork) or over in an office working on excel sheets for the online inventory system or reading books to pass time. Manager had very little work and there was little to be done around the maintenance shop. Living accommodations consisted of a short-term hotel room with unreliable satellite internet. No mode of transportation unless you drive your car to your assigned location which may be across the country.

    Advice to Management

Make sure that if you advertise a "hands-on dirty job" out on an oil rig, send the intern to a rig or at least ensure the on site manager has a plan to get the intern out to the field.

I have been working at Schlumberger full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They have no problems ever with my hours worked and always pay. As a mechanic its great. I make lots and spend most of my time at home

    Cons

Thought there was going to be room for advancement in the company but I am held back by power hungry managers. Was told it is impossible to complete my training to move to the next level. They reward stupidly have seen many under qualified people in managing positions and have seen lazy or incompetent mechanics promoted. Where as I work hard and get nothing. Not very motivating. Would not recommend anybody to work here.

    Advice to Management

Quit stepping on people to benefit yourself

I have been working at Schlumberger full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent place to start a career because of all the information available to you, especially if you did not study oilfield in college.

    Cons

They say they have international opportunities and job growth potential. But then they make it impossible to get promoted, and no one knows the process of promotion. The managers have their thumbs tied and cant do anything for you. And they rarely even know the name of the person who can. And the middle managers are constantly changing roles and moving around so by the time you finally get a name and a phone number, they are rotating to a new position and the employee has to start the process all over. To get promoted beyond entry level requires jumping through a bunch of hoops that no one will tell you about. And then you have to go through an interview process with people in the company that have very little to do with the job role, and many dont even work in the same area as you. Extremely top heavy company that cares about looking good more than about being good.

    Advice to Management

The work is being done by field staff, not support staff. It would payoff to make the field personnel the priority. And keep the experience in the field where they are directly working with the client.

    Cons

Mid career hires never seem to be accepted as "Blue". Very political. Very quick to jump to layoffs when the price of oil drops.

    Pros

The company is lucky to have some of the best people working for it, folks who are ready to teach and learn from others.

    Cons

Middle Management is clueless.. this is not coming from a disgruntled employee just fyi, this is from an employee who is ready to put in the time and add value...The short sightedness in decision making is staggering.. the lack of vision and inspirational leadership makes this, a place where young careers come to die...

    Advice to Management

Please hire the right pple...and please have some taste..

I worked at Schlumberger full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great structured training. Was able to learn a lot through hands on experience and through training program.

    Cons

Management was not completely transparent on work schedule. Was told multiple times that I would be off on holidays only to be surprised by a phone call asking me to head out to the field for a job.

    Advice to Management

Be honest with employees about when they will be expected to work, even if you know it isn't what they want to hear. It's better to expect to be out in the field than be surprised with a phone call.
