Houston, TX

Former Employee – worked at Schneider National Bulk Carriers full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGood pay based on experience, good overall benefits package, multiple locations and possible roles.

ConsMy first few years in management with SNBC were great. I worked on a great team, under a superb leader and mentor, and was well respected for my contribution to the team. Then I moved under different leadership to another location and suddenly my future was threatened. I was subject to daily intimidation tactics, and bait and switch expectations. Corp leadership refused to acknowledge the evidence of this failed leader’s threatening ways and just turned their backs. They allowed the team to lose multiple good leaders back to back (2010 through 2012) and never once cared to intercede, support the team, and stop the turnover of years of skills, talent, and results-backed management experience.

Advice to Senior ManagementPull your heads out of the frozen tundra sometimes. If you have associates with years of service who suddenly become issues, look at the ‘big picture’ for reasons. If the associate was effective for years and now suddenly there are issues, maybe the leader reporting the issues is not the right one for this individual/team? Admit when you've made a mistake (i.e., leadership choice for a team). Then correct that mistake in a respectful and timely manner before you lose the synergy of a great team. Be open to suggestions by associates at every level. Listen to your team AND your conscience, not just your business acumen.

ProsLoved my first 5 years there... the last 5 years were awful and wiped out the positive experience gained in the first 5.

ConsCliques. If you weren't in one... you didn't exist.

ProsGood company to work for. Great training program. good benefits. Upper management and all other accociates you deal with treat you like a human being and not a number.

Conspay is low for the type of work your expected to do. They encourage all communication to happen via on board truck computer system. Management "dosent liked to be called"

ProsOne of the best company driver pay and benefit packages available, many different work-home configurations. Generally speaking, if you are an employee that focuses your entire life on the company, the company Will look out for you.

ConsFrequent use of "Bait and Switch" tactics (See above about work-home configurations. They will claim availability of regional (approximately weekly time home), local (daily), or modified national (biweekly) configurations, but frequently when you go to inquire about other opportunities for being home, you will be told that they "aren't available in your area" or "aren't available at this time".

Advice to Senior ManagementMy advice to Senior Management would be to retire! Unfortunately they don't know anything at all about a trucking company. They may be brilliant businessmen and women, but they're trying to run the company from an accountant's perspective and losing track of real ideas and issues at the ground level.

ProsGood pay, decent benefits, lots of different departments / roles to try out. Potential for advancement and international travel.

ConsGrowing employee dissatisfaction makes for a very negative atmosphere. Leadership is contradictory, difficult to understand, and tough to respect. Employee contributions and talents are often undervalued, while a select few associates seem to keep promoting beyond their abilities. Cliquey upper management.

ProsSchneider is a stable company with decent benefits. It's a good place to gain experience and put on your resume.

ConsVery slim chance of promotion. Management would rather hire someone with no experience over someone who has been with the company. Pay is low compared to other companies. Communication is the worst I've ever seen. Office morale is lower than you can ever imagine. Lot of back stabbers that will use others to look good in front of management and management seems to love these types.

Advice to Senior ManagementThink about promoting from within. I have worked with some very knowledgable people that are more than capable of handling a management position but are overlooked for someone with absolutely no experience. Communicate changes before they happen rather than after the fact. Ask for more input from your employees instead of assuming you are doing a good job.

ProsSNBC, once you complete new driver training will offer the best hands on training anywhere. when new, they coddle and cradle you.

Consonce you get past the 2 yr driver mark and begin to advance in the cpm, your pay goes up, but your miles per week goes down, essentially making it harder for you to make a good paycheck. management isnt concerned with this fact, and pays little if no attention in making sure you make your miles. seems to be unconcerned with the driver perspective and morale. too much emphasis on developing rules under the disguise of safety, but ultimately just a way to reduce liability on SNBC should a incident arise.

Advice to Senior Managementlisten and rely more on driver perspective, take a good look at the driver turnover rate, look at the demographics on who is quitting and why. recognize your strengths and capatilize on them to reduce turnover. in the end by retaining the good quality drivers that you have, you will long term save money equating to more profit for everyone. all the rules are overkill, we are "PROFESSIONAL" drivers, we know what to do and when to do it. stop attatching EVERYTHING to the bonus, we should be given bonuses if we are performing the job safely and efficiently. create a balance where a driver can be home more, im sorry but 6 days out of the month home time isnt reasonable or healthy. be more of a company with your drivers at the forefront than your business, in essence, you need shippers and consignees, but if you dont have quality drivers, then what do you have ? stop the practice of HMG pay, we lose $3-6,000.00 a year because of this, but we are driving the miles.....

ProsThe only thing I liked about it was the free food that we would occasionally get when the sales reps or managers came to town.

ConsThe comminucation between the departments is horrible. Sometimes, you would receive an e-mail about the same issue 5 times. There would other times when I would not receive an e-mail at all. This is very frustrating when you are trying to sove problems.

Advice to Senior ManagementCross-train employees and have them learn how other jobs and and how your poistion directly affects others in the workplace.
