    Pros

An opportunity to dictate your own compensation at a route sales level. Gives the "owner mentality" individuals all the tools to be successful. A certain amount of autonomy exists at the manager level which could be beneficial to the self motivated.

    Cons

Compensation at the sales management level is significantly below standard for the amount of personal time and energy investment needed to be successful as a manager. Lack of work/life balance in all field sales levels is abysmal. Internal promotability has a focus shift to external hires. It has become easier to attain management levels as an external candidate than as an internal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With an extended operation it makes sense to consider shift management. AM/PM leaders with 8 hour shifts and fair pay would do a better job of ensuring productivity. Each depot should have at a minimum (2) sales managers and (1) operations manager. This would also eliminate the 24/7 on duty livelihood that currently exists with sales managers

I have been working at Schwan's Home Service full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Teamwork is great, depending on the RVP and the DSL - for sure- the push for greatness is always there., Goals are easily defined and stated clearly, however they do tend to change ( often), Quality of food - Pride.

    Cons

Bonus structure leaves little to drive for as a manager, tied to the district and then the corporation so those that don't give a crap weigh down everyone and "steal" the bonuses from those that are busting tail.
Company let's managers have less and less control of their own business and steal creativity from locations. Accountability from all team members- not there quick enough. Top heavy corporation - puts more strain on the field - for little to no reward.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have more tangible rewards- weekend trips for meeting goals, plaques, recognition from the Corporate heads. Share successes with the team, seems all we hear is not doing enough.

    Pros

Schwan's has a great group of loyal customers. Working with customers familiar with the product can be fun and eliminates a sells pitch.

    Cons

This company will promise you the world when you first start. In actually, the management is out of touch with the realities of operating the business on the ground level. As a New Customer Sales Specialist, you will be given a bridge salary of 45K and instantly lowered after 3 months. The National Sales Director is constantly micromanaging managers and placing tunes of pressure on New Customer Sales Igniters. DO NOT get sucked in by the wonderful opportunity to work from home. Schwan's managers will micromanage your life and call you all hours of the night. If you do not meet their out of touched and unrealistic expectations, they will fire you in a heart beat. Who wants to constantly wake up with the fear of not having a job the next day. You are better off selling Mary Kay!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a different approach to New Customer acquisition. Reduce your turn-over rate by retaining managers who do not micromanage and belittle employees. Establish realistic and steady goals for Igniters!

I worked at Schwan's Home Service full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Autonomy was one of the best practices. You created your customer base, serviced them systematically, and had the ability to be happy about providing a service that many people enjoyed.

    Cons

Being instructed to perform for no less than 12 hours per day became stressful when office time wasn't counted into your hourly work. You were required to be in the office by 8:00 a.m. The problem arrived when you didn't start a daily meeting until 8:30, and it included a 45 minute conference call, at which point, you have already lost an hour and fifteen minutes of sales time. Then, on top of that, you would find that your truck hasn't been loaded yet, you still have inventory to check, and then you have to check the status of your vehicle. So, it's now 10:00, and your leaving the depot. To make things worse, your first stop is an hour away, ergo, you have now lost three full hours of sales time. So, you go throughout the full day, seeing somewhere between 70-100 customers (businesses would have several customers at a time.) and you rushed to see as many business customers before 5:00 and you are left with 15 stops between 5:00 and say 8:00. So, you've seen every customer possible and you return to the depot at 9:00. At which point, you've been working 13 hours, but management makes you feel worthless because you were only seeing customers for 10 of those hours.
Management's constant incapacity for making their employees comfortable and content is the worst thing about Schwan's Home Services - I assume it would be those reasons to explain their entire withdrawal from the Southeast United States

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

One of the biggest opportunities would be to communicate comfort and performance education to the employees as opposed to make them feel like second class people.

    Pros

Good, hard working coworkers. Potential for good income. Depot managers are generally ex drivers that understand. Customers are awesome regular people.

    Cons

To make a living you must work 14 hours a day for commissions. Upper managment thinks you're a bum for not sacrificing your family to the company. You must have one of the very FEW decent routes to make any money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dont be greedy or evil. Respect your employees.

    Pros

Good company since it does not follow stock tends

    Cons

Micro Management. They do not allow the managers to think independently or want to try new ideas to grow the business

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You hired people for there abilities. Let them use them. Also open you mind to advertising. If it didn't work there would be no adds for anything.. Quit changing compensation for sales people every 12 months. If it is not right fix it and move on.

    Pros

The customers were what kept me going for over 20 years! I took care of them, and they took care of me. Great benefits, vacations, 401K.

    Cons

Hours, pay, micro management. Very outdated computers and GPS units.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Marvin trained us to treat every customer the same whether they bought a half gallon of ice cream or all of their monthly groceries. As a customer, I can tell you that 2 hour time windows suck. Quit kicking the cusomers, RSR's and warehouse people to the ground. They are your life line! Take care of them and they will take care of you! The company is way too top heavy. Cut upper management salaries and purchase new equipment!
