    I worked at Scientific-Atlanta

    Pros

Advancement and benefits were good. PLenty of opportunity to look at new markets and participate in the sales and marketing of same.

    Cons

Newly hired management has a tendency to replace mid level managers, regardless of past performance, so they "manufacture" reasons to get rid of them, buying them off with 4 month severance packages if they sign a release.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Live by core values, actions and matching behaviors. Don't terminate managers when new Presidents of Divisions arrive, especially those that received great reviews and were on career trajectories.

    I worked at Scientific-Atlanta

    Pros

Scientific Atlanta is a very stable company, working in a very stable line of business. They have been around forever, people are really nice and overall you have to give it to management: they know their stuff.

    Cons

Since the company is very stable there is little to no opportunity for change, people aren't the best technically (although there are a few rockstars). Inertia is a way of life (I'd never seen a technology company still do the 50 page paper forms to fill out when you start). This is probably a good place to hide in a down economy.
People at SA were not too happy about the Cisco acquisition because it meant they would have to change... which is probably a good thing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the old boys club, get things moving.

  5.

I have been working at Scientific-Atlanta as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Having worked in the Lawrenceville Campus, came across some really good and professional people who would point you to the right directions. The only fair expectation would be that you would pick up from there and start delivering. You would be satisfied both technically and personally working with good managers and engineers.

    Cons

Gradually was shifted to projects getting executed from India(Chennai) and I must say that in my 8 years of carrier, have never seen such atrociously executed projects. I had the misfortune to work with one of the worst managers in my whole life, the metric here for measuring performance seemed to be the number of builds you distribute in a week and the number of false/true triages you do. No one is really bothered to root cause an issue until it becomes a show stopper for the end customer.
Essentially the work consists of maintaining a legacy code and porting to newer processors. the code in itself is really a mess and it's legacy. Couple it with the rude way the employees talk and you have a perfect recipe for disaster. The products are not something which will get you burning too. Most of the work here gets done by contractors and most of the employees who undergo trainings have a silo mentality, knowledge sharing is absolutely nill and it's all about playing blame games and enjoying the show while the company pays you a fat pay cheque every month.
Summarily it's a service company, which employs another service company to do it's work because it thinks it is developing products, but honestly these products are not required by anyone in the set top industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Someone needs to work and understand the product, while someone needs to manage these developers. You can't simply hire a lot of contractors and play the managerial game. And if this is what is to be done, please don;t play around with careers of experienced guys.

I worked at Scientific-Atlanta full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    stable and boring work
get a chance to work on middleware applications called embedded systems
    maintaining proprietary software

    Cons

Very political setup and biased depending on mangers
Does not even care about contractors working from service based companies on their projects. treats them like second class citizens.
No real embedded work. Just middleware high level apps.
Create a hype on interviews and treat new joiners like illiterates.
Experienced people termed experts do not even know basics.
Employees are worried about job security and make life horrible for new comers. Please ignore this organization. Dont be fooled by the pay package or intelligent interview questions.
Try to recruit people from prestigious colleges and offer them crap work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a stable environment for senior employees so that they can mentor and foster a culture of trust and better relationships with new joiners and junior staff.
Do not encourage seniors to mock at employees without domain knowledge on video related stuff.
Do not recruit contractors from other service organizations when internal employees are not willing to work with them.
Focus on a world class product based on current industry standards rather than running after customers with unrealistic requests for features.
