I worked at Scotts Miracle-Gro full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Small company feel. You'll wear many hats and get exposure to different parts of the business. You can learn a lot while you are there. Benefits are good, although pay is only average.

    Cons

Lots of micromanagement from the top. Very reactive, with no clear vision/strategy. What little direction is there changes as the wind blows. Extremely passive aggressive culture. Very unprofessional. A lack of professionalism, poor ethics and questionable values that start at the very top with the CEO - and it's basically his company so don't expect anything to change. If you really know what you are doing you will become frustrated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Scotts Miracle-Gro full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Industry and brand leader in lawn and garden CPG. Very large company with career paths in numerous functions (marketing, finance, supply chain, legal, HR, sales, etc.), so you have plenty of options to gain experience. Good compensation and benefits, and their "Live Total Health" initiative really helps drive employee wellness.

    Cons

Executive leadership's strategy and tactics change frequently which makes it difficult for mid-level management to operate. You must be ready to operate in a mode of constant change and uncertainty.

    Pros

Work at your own pace, opportunity for good commission.

    Cons

Revolving door of employees, some really bad ones. Management cares more about the dollar than the people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more into your employees and some may stick around for more than a year.

I worked at Scotts Miracle-Gro as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

There is a lot to learn about the personal lawn care and, weed control, insect control, and landscaping. If you have an interest in any of these things, this is a great place to begin. The management want to help you grow skills, such as creative thinking and negotiation, inventory management, sales, but will let you learn at your own pace. Online education from home and hands on training in the field. The ownership is all about creating a family culture. Managers are trained to be responsive and helpful. "Call me any time" is something said often and meant.

    Cons

Sometimes there are times when you may not know what to do during your work day precisely and need to be creative in order to save yourself the hassle of needing to redo work if your manager doesn't think the results of your initiative are going to be fruitful. Working with Big Box policy and employees can be challenging to your patience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Groom the Merchandisers a little more and pay a couple more dollars per hour to attract better talent at the merchandiser level.

I worked at Scotts Miracle-Gro as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

very friendly coworkers who were always willing to help if you had a question. Forward looking company with clear goals and timeline. Great benefits for full time employees and great work/life balance.

    Cons

lack of employment opportunity for interns. It felt as if I was hired only as an extra hand with few opportunities to prove my capabilities beyond very basic tasks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

create a more structured intern program with potential for full time placement

I have been working at Scotts Miracle-Gro full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of extra perks & time off.

    Cons

Good ole' boys fraternity; women are paid much lower than men for the same position & work three times as hard to be recognized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start following your own guidelines for culture & values; treat everyone the same.

    I worked at Scotts Miracle-Gro

    Pros

Good work/life balance, treated with respect by upper management, some good perks.

    Cons

Low pay. The only reason I left the company is because another company offered me $10K more a year to do almost the exact same job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall, a good place to work. The only advice is pay should be a little more competitive at the entry levels.

I worked at Scotts Miracle-Gro full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I started working here right out of college and I could have easily worked here for another 40 years, but life of course took me a different course. This is a company that truly cares about its employees, providing tons of benefits. I always felt like the Corporate group was part of the Hagedorn family.

    Cons

It's not for everyone, especially if you are a smoking Liberal. Promotions only seem to occur for the MEN who have been there for five or more years.

I have been working at Scotts Miracle-Gro full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Terrific benefits for all employees, volunteerism encouraged, health management program strongly in place and considerable days off throughout the year.

    Cons

Executives make decisions and then can't stick to them. Rarely is anything given enough time to see if it could be successful before implementing another (short-lived) approach.

    Negative Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
