Scotts offers a nice work environment

Marketing Analyst (Current Employee) Marysville, OH

ProsPeople in the company are willing to share information with others to help get the job done. Also, people seem to genuinely care about one another. Makes for a nice work environment.

ConsSome teams are disconnected where everyone works on their own with little to no collaboration. Not an effective way to run a department. Felt very isolated in my role w/little communication w/management!

Also HR, very slow to respond to job postings, even for internal candidates. Kind of left in the dark to wonder if there will be movement.

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage those in management positions(i.e. directors) to take classes on promoting the upward mobility of their people. Require team building and teach your managers to develop their people, not just do their own jobs. Give them time to care for their people by allowing managers/directors time to build those in their teams!!! It would make for a more stable work environment and help people have more satisfying careers at Scotts.

    All surface, no substance.

Project/Brand Manager (Former Employee) Marysville, OH

ProsCampus is attractive. Cafeteria is professionally designed and decorated. Food offerings are nutritious and a good value. Employee community garden serves as a great team builder and is really beneficial to the local community. Company gives an all-out effort for holiday parties.

ConsVery cliquish. Who you know is more important than what you know. Some departments are regarded as more valuable than others. Teamwork is non-existent and not encouraged. Yearly reviews are done on a curve with someone on every team receiving a "does not meet" status, even if all team members gave stellar performances. Human resources is ineffective in dealing with internal conflicts or advising next steps for career advancement.

Can be a rewarding job when times and sales are good, tough when not.

    Merchandiser/Counselors (Current Employee)

ProsYou work on your own unsupervised often.
    The pay is good.
The product line is great and you are given the knowledge to sell it well.

ConsNo matter how hard you work or how long you have been on the job you have no real sense of job security.
Nepotism runs deep in the company culture.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of the merchandiser/counselors, make it a real job with options to advance within the company. We are your sales foundation for big box retail stores.

I never have been treated so bad

Telemarketer Sales (Former Employee) Elgin, IL

ProsNone! No pros about working for this turn over mill.

ConsThey turn over every salesman so they don't have to pay commissions. They treat you like you don't matter. Out of 16 in our training class only 1 was still employed after 3 months when I was let go.

Advice to Senior ManagementDoes this company have any real managers?

Positive experience to be part of the group from day one.

Pilot Plant, R&D Intern (Former Employee) Marysville, OH

ProsMy group was small and worked well together. We got our jobs done and had fun doing them.

ConsEngineers work in the manufacturing area away from the corporate building where sales works. Engineers are thought to be inadequate to the dressy sales people. Corporate office had plush everything and great amenities including fancy cafeteria with multiple types of food. Manufacturing had a cheap school cafeteria design.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend more time in the manufacturing area. Some of the guys may have great ideas on ways to improve the process.

ProsGreat company match on 401K, time off, and health club reimbursement.

ConsManagers only care about the bottom line, lots of saturday work
