Great place to learn, experiement, in a great location

    Mechanical Engineer (Former Employee)
    La Jolla, CA

Prosa few of the labs are small, so you have a chance to develop a very broad skillset
Depending on lab, had the opportunity to travel
Relax, laid back culture- as well as PTO
    Surrounded by extremely intelligent people.
great place for interns as well!

Cons-Relax Laid back culture, you really have to be self motivated to really get anything done
-base pay is low, however when you travel it can make up for it
-because labs can be small, you won't get the big industry experience

What a great place to work

    Analyst (Current Employee)
    La Jolla, CA

ProsSteps from the ocean, world-class research, friendliest, most laid-back, yet hardest working and smartest people you will ever meet in your life. There are endless networking opportunities with weekly seminars, forums, happy hours, and discounts. Nearly all professors and researchers here are the absolutely best in their field. Atmospheric Sciences, Marine Biology, Satellite Remote Sensing, Seismology, and many more - SIO is home to the most well known, well published, most awarded scientists in the world. Their passion is contagious and the impact of their research has positive direct impact to the community. Excellent employee benefits too. Very flexible working schedule as long as you get your work done. Great job stability. Great pay.

ConsYou must pay over 1k each year for a parking pass. It's hard to get in, but once you are in - you're in. Mobility of positions in tough though. So if a sour apple gets the job and somehow able to pass the 6 months promotion period, it's hard to get them fired. I've seen two of those since my time working here. One randomly quit and the other is hanging on firmly even though they are lazy(and everyone knows it). Since most people work in small teams, promotions are rare. Asking for a pay raise is rare but can be done. Most staff in management have been here for years, and their lack of care is visible. They do the bare minimum and get out.

    Student Researcher (Former Employee)

ProsWork really depends on which lab you are in.
    --Beautiful location
    --Fairly new facilities
--Bus runs regularly to upper campus

Cons--Far from upper campus if you need to get there fast

    Advice to Senior ManagementNone

    Great internship experience for students

    Student Assistant (Current Employee)
    La Jolla, CA

    Pros-Flexible Hours
    -Interesting projects
    -Rewards for exceptional performance

If your boss knows you have a skillset that he can put to use in a project, you will have an AMAZING time here.

ConsIn my personal experience, there were no real drawbacks to working here. However, I can imagine that if your skills don't line up to a project that your boss can place you on, then you will end up doing very, very basic work.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep at it, this place is an amazing environment for student interns, both for learning, and contributing.

    Great research insititution

    Data Processing Assistant (Current Employee)
    La Jolla, CA

ProsFlexible hours, decent pay, entry level research job for a college student. I like the work environment because it is relaxed and I can get my work done. Great location right off of La Jolla Shores. I can see the ocean from my building.

ConsI do data processing which is pretty basic so I do the same tasks everyday. I don't talk to my supervisor very often.

Great Ideals but Little Follow Through

    Engineer/Consultant (Former Employee)
    San Diego, CA

ProsSailing on research vessels is a dream come true for anyone with a wayfaring heart and strong work ethic. The company pays well for entry level positions in this regard, "when you are at sea."

ConsMost of the support staff is non-existent due in large part to the organizations lack of military oversight. There are pockets of great people but the whole functions like an angry version of Jersey Shores. Beyond that, if you are unfortunate enough to be stuck in port the pay drops to minimum wage or close to it.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn to recognize the difference between project managers and technical engineers. You can ill afford to neglect either. Past that, invest a little in training and reap a harvest in retention. Empower your staff and they will excel on there own.
