Pros
Work, life balance was good. The new building is LEED certified Gold, and everything is very open and airy so it's a nice environment to work in. The salary is competetive with the entire country even though the cost of living in Knoxville is low, so you can earn a very nice living. There is a lot of in-house events to get everyone excited about the networks, shows, and talent, so you feel confident about the network you're representing.
Cons
There are too many VPs. Seems like there are certain people on the fast track to upper management, and everyone else gets stuck in their same job for years. But I guess that's typical for corporate America. Upper management fears for their jobs too much and in turn makes decisions like puppets rather than doing what is best for their employees and nothing new ever happens for the fear the idea will fail. Large bonuses are given to management but not to anyone else so there is a lack of motivation to do great work because nothing is ever rewarded. Bonus are partially based on budgets and diversity instead of doing great things.
Advice to Senior Management
Recognize those that do good things and reward them. Practive new, innovative ideas and don't be afraid of change.
Pros
Great people
Cool office space
Work Life Balance Valued
Cons
not a lot of promoting from w/in the organization
fuzzy communication btwn Senior Leaders to the group at large
Advice to Senior Management
At the moment it feels as though there are way too many Chiefs and not a lot of us little Indians
Pick a leader and get behind him (or her). All Senior Managers get behind the leader and then lets create some kick ass media experiences.
Pros
Once you get in the door, it's very hard to get terminated.
Cons
People seem to do favors in order to get a promotion
Pros
They pay really well, they have great benefits and support a good work-life balance.
Cons
Far too many people for the amount of work. It creates an atmosphere that leads to apathy. I saw so many people surfing the internet or watching movies I was shocked. Also I have never seen so many fancy titles. The entire management structure should be streamlined.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop hiring more people! You could probably be twice your size in revenue with the same amount of people if they were directed properly. Also not everyone can have a fancy title. Ultimately most people want to take care of their families, get paid well and be challenged than have a fancy title. But you give titles out like a name tag at a meet and greet.
Pros
The employees, balance between personal and work time.
Cons
disorganized departments, too many managers scattered around. no centralization of management.
Pros
Good benefits, good time off, good working environment for most departments.
Cons
HR does not support the average employee and it shows. Company becoming more "corporate" and less family feeling. Mid management seems more concerned with micromanaging than actually working. Top executives foster dog eat dog on bonuses, which the average employees do not get.
Advice to Senior Management
Get rid of HR. Too top heavy. Stop the executive meal catering - it sends the wrong message.
Pros
company includes biggest networks in media, company supports families and work/life balance
Cons
lack of professional development and growth opportunities, company is top heavy with too many VPs who lack leadership and management experience, no incentives for employees to innovate
Advice to Senior Management
train mid-level managers to lead, get rid of duplicate VPs
Pros
Great name, exciting content. Ability to work with new technology.
Cons
Amazing poor management structure, no direction. People are more interested in covering their behinds than driving the business forward.
Advice to Senior Management
Re-arrange the department structure. The idea s cenrtralized IT with no reporting lines to the business and no responsibility for the business goals. This worked great in the 70s!
Pros
Strong pay and benefits package
Cons
Promotions and job changes are often not based on merit, but rather political alliances. There are a lot of inept long-term with high titles.
Advice to Senior Management
Be fair to the customer and the employee.
Pros
-great brands
-good camaraderie within teams & willingness to help each other out
Cons
-no ramifications for employees doing a poor job and bringing others down
-micromanaging tendencies that can suffocate competent individuals
-slow to make decisions as with many larger companies
-radical salary gaps within same positions
Advice to Senior Management
really listen to the talented team members before you lose them
