Researcher

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Sdsu Research Foundation

ProsWorking at a state college has its pros. State holidays and benefits. Opportunities for collaboration and growth in a variety of disciplines. Good place to start out.

ConsFunding can be tight in several of the labs, which can be a challenge for innovation and branching out into new research areas.

Full-time employee

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
San Diego, CA

I worked at Sdsu Research Foundation full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat health benefits, decent pay for entry level jobs, physically lax job, quiet environment

ConsReally heavy on micromanagement, sitting behind a computer all day, not allowed to talk to other people often because upper management assumes you aren't working, and very little room for advancement

Advice to Senior ManagementTrust your employees more, don't assume things before you understand what is going on, and ask genuine questions of your employees

I worked as a research/teaching assistant at San Diego State University

Graduate Research/Teaching Assistant (Former Employee)

I worked at Sdsu Research Foundation part-time for more than a year

ProsThe work was interesting and the work hours were flexible. I was able to work around my graduate school classes, and, of course, San Diego is a beautiful place to work. The teaching staff are generally enthusiastic and care about teaching.

ConsThe pay was fairly low, not leaving me enough to cover my bills. Otherwise, I enjoyed the position. As is typically the case, working as a teaching assistant takes time away from research, and isn't the best use of a graduate student's time.

Great organization but non profit funding is unsteady

I have been working at Sdsu Research Foundation full-time for more than 5 years

ProsTrainings for staff are great. Meetings keep goals and progression.

ConsFunding is dependent on luck and state. Meetings may be too frequent. Traingings may be repetetive or unuseful.

good student job

Research Assistant (Former Employee)
San Diego, CA

I worked at Sdsu Research Foundation part-time for more than a year

ProsI was paid while gaining research experience. For the lab I worked in, the hours were completely flexible, and I could work up to 20 hours a week. There was no minimum, though the PI would be unhappy if it was much less than 15, I imagine.

ConsI had to be very self motivated and pretty much teach myself everything I needed to know to do the research. The PI had no time for individual students, though PhDs and postdocs in the lab would help us.
