I worked at SeaChange full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Company used to strongly embrace good development practices. Not sure if that's true anymore. Benefits package was excellent.

    Cons

Company focus is lacking - or at least more concerned with upper management cashing out, rather than leading edge technology

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a new niche. The backoffice and set-top box is finally changing in a big way.

Former Employee - Engineering Manager in Milpitas, CA

I worked at SeaChange full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The pros of working at seachange have dwindled to virtually none. I suppose there are some good people there who are good to work with, but they have zero authority in the company.

    Cons

Your career and life will not benefit from working there. Seachange's reputation in the industry is bad and getting worse. Within the company you will have no chance at advancement based on your ability or the work you do; you will only move up if you play toady to the powers that be.

In my tenure at seachange I witnessed the following:
*HR that routinely lies to and mistreats employees. This includes aggressively arguing with and lying to employees who were being laid off; HR would not even allow a dignified exit to people who gave years of their lives to seachange.
*Senior Managers who routinely promised raises and promotions to rank and file then never delivered, and who routinely lied to employees and customers and left Engineering to sort out the lies.
*One of SeaChange's Vice Presidents who rewrote employee reviews (without the knowledge or consent of the employee's manager) and placed blame for management's failure to work with customers on the shoulders of Engineers.
    * One of SeaChange's Directors who routinely thwarted innovation and improvement of seachange products and expected blind, unquestioning obedience from all subordinates, and who lied about subordinates on their reviews to deflect blame from his own mismanagement.
    * Seachange taking back accrued vacation time of California employees; that is, California employees experienced a reduction in their accrued vacation balances (without taking vacation or being paid for the reduction). By all the research I have done, this is not allowed under California law.
    * Sales force who had no familiarity with seachange products and who simply agreed with everything customers demanded then handed the mess off to Engineering to sort out.
    * Managers directing hundreds of thousands of dollars in consulting work to companies in which they held a financial stake (blatant conflict of interest, anyone?). The consultants never delivered functional or deployable products.
    * Senior management that provides updates to seachange employees once a year whether it's needed or not (/sarcasm). Seriously, I hoped the CEO that was hired in November 2011 would actually lead and give the company direction and information regularly (which would have been a huge change over the previous CEO), but the new guy settled into the same pattern of silence.
    * IT department that makes infrastructure decisions based on minimizing the amount of work they will have to do, while the rest of the employees must suffer with unreliable, difficult to use network and software.

The entire corporate culture of seachange is based on worshiping those in power. There is no accountability and no need to deliver on promises or do work. All you have to do to survive there is be an obsequious little zero. In the California, Acton and Ft. Washington offices of seachange there is no leadership, only a continuous scramble to cover the lies management and sales tell customers. The Eindhoven, Netherlands office of seachange was staffed by arrogant and incompetent hackers who could not create simple features for their software anything less than 6 to 12 months late, yet were never held accountable for the delays and shoddy quality of their products.

If you are considering an offer from seachange, think very very carefully about it. The odds are you will regret ever hearing of seachange should you be unfortunate enough to be employed there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try being honest for a change. Hold senior managers accountable. Create a culture that rewards innovation and creativity, not deceit and betrayal.

I have been working at SeaChange full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

SeaChange was always a leader in providing good benefits and an excellent vacation/time-off package.

    Cons

    Very poor upper management decisions; HR department more concerned about protecting top-level management jobs than working for fairness in employment practices;

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean house. Review your financials and the decisions that led to the current state of those financials. Pull HR records for mid to upper-level managers and get rid of those whose records are anything less than stellar. You cannot expect employee loyalty to managers who treat their employees with lack of respect (at best) and disdain (at worst). Stop making unreasonable and fantastical promises to customers - be honest with them and your employees and you will have both customer and employee loyalty.

I have been working at SeaChange full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

At times very little work to do being a remote employee as management does not manage work distribution well if at all.

    Cons

Very little communication, management or anyone caring anymore. Executives just want their bonuses and to sell the company while the employees are trying to make a living and career. No one cares anymore so the moral is horrible.

I have been working at SeaChange full-time

    Pros

Good benefits, good salary if you're prepared fight for it. Somewhat interesting work. Co-workers are good people and fun to work with for the most part.

    Cons

Company currently doesn't seem to understand what its market is. They've not been very successful in attempting to purchase technology and outsource their way to a new Back Office product. Cash flow issues are forcing management to make bad decisions. Once a company starts making bad decisions, they usually continue and that seems to be case here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop behaving in a shady manner. Stop avoiding your customers and hire enough smart people to handle the workload. If you can't do that, you no longer have a business.

Current Employee - Senior Software Engineer in Milpitas, CA

I have been working at SeaChange full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

It's exciting building software that enables customers to acquire video assets from multiple sources, be it internet, home network or broadcast TV. It's a challenging experience and can be rewarding from a technical viewpoint.

    Cons

The management behaves as if everyone is expendable, that one person is as good as the next, but not in a positive, egalitarian way. Rather the mgmt doesn't want to depend on any of the bright people but there are plenty of non-productive people that seems to hang around. There is no career development, it's always scrambling, hacking, survival mode. It seems never ending.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward and praise the true developers and engineers. Be honest with yourselves and realize your own shortcomings. Learn to be patient and follow one course of action without switching gears on a monthly basis.

Once Great Company Undone by Financial Engineering

Former Employee - Software Engineer II
Former Employee - Software Engineer II

I worked at SeaChange full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

-Vacation and Benefits package is truly top-notch.
-Flexible hours and working from home
-Many of the engineers are truly great and working with them is a learning experience.

    Cons

-Company is trying to move from being hardware-centric to software-centric without an understanding of
how to run a software business.
-In an era when multiscreen viewing is becoming more seamless, SeaChange insists on building evermore
     silos.
-Development of forward looking products that set industry direction has been abandoned in favor of a
reactionary consultant-based model, focused more on signing contracts which look good in press releases than a long-term business strategy

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is no shortcut to success, sustainable growth come from a sound engineering and business strategy. SeaChange was built on forward-looking products that defined an industry. Without a stable product structure and sound long-term roadmaps, all the stock buybacks in the world won't keep the stock price afloat.
