I have been working at Seagate Technology full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Seagate is very flexible with work life balance. Everyone works hard to get products released and keep customers happy.

    Cons

Work is always intense with long hours. Nothing great ever comes from easy work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Always say thank you to employees for great work. Bonuses are always a great way to show appreciation, but at least saying thank means a lot.

    Uncertainty for Contract Worker

Former Employee - Senior Engineering Specialist in Bloomington, MN
Former Employee - Senior Engineering Specialist in Bloomington, MN

I worked at Seagate Technology full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Higher pay than comparable job task. It'd be a steal for my coworker who was paid as engineer and work same as my job role, which is basically as a technician.

    Cons

No backup and pass of knowledge learning from professional in deep of the night 3rd shift, but even in the rest of the 12 hour long overlapping day hours there wasn't knowledge transfer process.
The real problem being treated as a contract worker is that there was absolutely no transparency in stability of your current job. As employer likes, they renew your contract hooking you up to high pay but when they don't want you, not out of your work fault, they would ask you return your company entrance badge and clear up your office place, i. e.,to pack up and leave the company, in 5 minutes. It's an absolutely dehumanizing experience I ever experienced.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

High technology doesn't mean sitting in high hill for a long while. Continuing this division of labor force between the hired and the temp. will only hurt productivity in the long run.
At one moment the management seemed to be prioritizing a team project group. Another moment the company put the emphasis somewhere else but showed traces of unprofessional and rough transitions.

    Pros

Technical and academic advancement is highly valued here. Seagate has the best tuition program of any company in the area

    Cons

Of late, raises have diminished and been largely replaced with bonuses

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Revamp the performance review system and tie bonuses and raises with performance.

    Pros

A great place to gain experience in a corporate environment. Plenty of resources available for continuous learning of applications and certifications.

    Cons

It seems that career growth may be limited in this particular function. I have been under the impression that this function is as highly recognized as other functions.

    Pros

Pay was good and good ability to buy stock, my boss treated me very well and like I was a responsible worker

    Cons

Lay people off like they are garbage and treat them that way. I know someone who had been there 23 years and came in one morning with security at her desk. They told her she could not empty out her desk, she had to make an appointment - under their surveillance.

I worked at Seagate Technology full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Very organized HR policies
    - Clean building, nice infrastructure to work

    Cons

    - Too many useless processes at some sites, you are directly competing with engineers from other sites who dont have to go through all the processes and they can be more productive
    - if you are stuck in a team which does not get visibility at upper level, your career is doomed
    - dont recognize all the employees for hard work, only some

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are many hard working engineers working for promotion....its not their job to make themselves visible to you, its your job to give them what they deserve.

Current Employee - Senior Staff Engineer in Shakopee, MN

I have been working at Seagate Technology full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay is decent and majority of workforce is top-notch. Technology is exciting and pace is fast.

    Cons

Executive management mostly is not helpful. Structural problems in many organizations limit improvements that can be made.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tie bonus compensation to what lower level employees receive. It makes no sense why VPs and above get multiple 10's of % bonus when employees get 1%. Move low performing directors out of their position and get people that want to make a difference in those positions.

Current Employee - Senior Director in Minneapolis, MN

I have been working at Seagate Technology full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The compensation is good, and the company is flexible about your time off and working hours. The U.S. sites are outgrowing the 8-5 working hours culture and recognizing that business in a company that circles the globe happens 24 hours a day.

    Cons

Still uses a stacked ranking system and there is little visibility to comparisons between departments. This forces the same distribution of rankings down to a small department level. If you hire well and build a talented department this can be very demotivating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the ranking system to get more in tune with modern management practices.
