Former Employee - Firmware Engineer II in Shakopee, MN

I worked at Seagate Technology full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Very organized HR policies
    - Clean building, nice infrastructure to work

    Cons

    - Too many useless processes at some sites, you are directly competing with engineers from other sites who dont have to go through all the processes and they can be more productive
    - if you are stuck in a team which does not get visibility at upper level, your career is doomed
    - dont recognize all the employees for hard work, only some

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are many hard working engineers working for promotion....its not their job to make themselves visible to you, its your job to give them what they deserve.

I have been working at Seagate Technology full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay is decent and majority of workforce is top-notch. Technology is exciting and pace is fast.

    Cons

Executive management mostly is not helpful. Structural problems in many organizations limit improvements that can be made.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tie bonus compensation to what lower level employees receive. It makes no sense why VPs and above get multiple 10's of % bonus when employees get 1%. Move low performing directors out of their position and get people that want to make a difference in those positions.

I worked at Seagate Technology full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

work life balance-- 9 to 5, cant believe those companies still exist :)
    decent pay
    decent benefits
    good co-workers
company is doing alright for now

    Cons

    no career growth
except for few groups, its mundane work, nothing cutting edge
a dinosaur-- not sure if it can survive in the rapidly changing industry, with competition from smaller, nimble companies
if you want to grow this is not the place; if you want to spend a few years before your retirement then this is the place
    location--winters get really brutal

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

its only a matter of time before ssd companies start taking your business, make sure products in new markets are successful. take initiatives to change the work culture, make sure ppl are challenged on a daily basis and things are actually deliver on schedule. engineer culture needs a major revamp.

I have been working at Seagate Technology full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The compensation is good, and the company is flexible about your time off and working hours. The U.S. sites are outgrowing the 8-5 working hours culture and recognizing that business in a company that circles the globe happens 24 hours a day.

    Cons

Still uses a stacked ranking system and there is little visibility to comparisons between departments. This forces the same distribution of rankings down to a small department level. If you hire well and build a talented department this can be very demotivating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the ranking system to get more in tune with modern management practices.

I have been working at Seagate Technology full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

People are friendly, job is challenging, planning personal/professional growth is expected. Flexibility for work life balance is encouraged. I really like my management team.

    Cons

Getting to know your personal resources can be a challenge with a Global company. Sometimes communication gets lost when trying to work through issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep solid communication between teams. It saves a lot of problems on big projects that unknowningly cross paths.

    Pros

    Good work life balance ,
easy commute to Shakopee because its far south of the city..

    Cons

limited career opportunities in the ASIC department.
    Very hard to get promotion.
Cafe food is very bad and limited for vegetarian.

Former Employee - Senior Staff Engineer in Minneapolis, MN

I worked at Seagate Technology full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Technically challenging environment working with talented people. Development strategy and project decisions are data driven. Good people to work with and pretty good benefits (good benefits for employee, becoming less of a good deal for family members).

    Cons

Questionable commitment of company to R&D. Increasing technical challenges of maintaining rate of storage density growth leads to questions of value / ROI of R&D (if density gains level off, hard drives will still be around as a commodity but R&D not as essential). This lead to pressure from upper management looking to cut R&D staff. Some locations seemed to offer more opportunity for advancement along the technical track.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Commit to long term growth by investing in R&D to achieve technical leadership. Spend less time concerned with dividends, stock buybacks, self defeating cost savings.

    Pros

Competitive pay, very good benefits, commitment to personal and social well-being
lots of bright, dedicated people working together

    Cons

cyclic hiring / firing phases, rigid rank ordering required for evaluations
    a bit top-heavy in management
somewhat silo-ed, departments guard their turf jealously
sudden changes in direction, seemingly less from internal findings than following other companies.
