    Pros

    The CEO and upper management foster a company culture that is very patient focused. The work environment is supportive, and benefits are good. Great science, people are very passionate about the work, and there is a high amount of integrity in the way things are done.

    Cons

    It can take time to achieve upward mobility due a relatively low turnover rate. Career development is treated by some managers as a black box which the employee should have limited knowledge of.

    Pros

    Seattle Genetics has grown to be one of the top biotech companies in the Seattle area. It is known as the place to be because it is a growing company with a great product and pipeline. The pay is fair and benefits are really good. The common thread across all departments is that everyone is very respectful of each other. Overall, it's one of the best and most productive work environments I've been in.

    Cons

    Contrary to the company name, Seattle Genetics is not actually located in Seattle. It is headquartered in Bothell which is about 25 miles north of Seattle proper.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The CEO is too vested in the day to day sometimes. He needs to focus on the bigger picture/strategic decisions. The company should also be more open to flex time.

    Pros

    All company meetings every Friday are a nice way to learn what's happening in different areas and it's nice to see the president on a weekly basis. It helps keep the small biotech feeling that most people in this industry can appreciate. Pay was fair and seemed within the range of other local biotech. Benefits include stock options and ok health/dental plan.

    Cons

    Some managers do not have the right skill set to manage others and it seems like once they reach the Director level, they aren't held accountable to anyone for their actions. This leads to mass exodus of employees under one leader. I don't think this is anything specific to Seagen, but make sure you get a good feeling for management style before you accept a position. I wasfortunate to have an amazing Director, but I saw several good people leave due to poor communication/relationships with their manager.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Continue to empower your employees to make decisions and support them when it is the best decision for the science and the company. We appreciate having autonomy (if earned) and use positive reinforcement - employees don't want to just get the nasty grams when they have missed a timeline or objective measure. This type of negative reinforcement will only breed the behavior of people performing just enough to avoid reprimand.

    Pros

    There are chances to learn about every aspect of biotech if you want to learn.
    Reasonable time off.

    Cons

    A lot of micro-management from people that aren't actually your manager. Annoying.
    Not actually in Seattle.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pay attention to why people are leaving the company. Some of us moved for family. Some others just had horrid, horrid experiences. Try to fix the latter.

    Pros

    This company will help save many lives. I like their vision and goals and where it's going. CEO is great. Benefits are competitive with other biotech company which tend to have great medical/dental/retirement plans. Seattle Genetics is no exception.

    Cons

    The IT department is old school and seems to be staying that way. Behind on everything. Lots of growing pains and completely reactive. The were transition when I was there and it seemed neither for better or worse.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get some positive leadership within IT. Everyone was very negative and brought the energy way down when it needed it most. Find people you can stand by and won't throw you under the bus. Someone like the Director of Facilities who was positive uplifting and encouraging.

    The people. And really that's it.

    Cons

    They don't hire people who are intelligent very often. They definitely go for grades over common sense.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Grades aren't as important as someone who can do the job. Don't ask someone who is very qualified what their GPA was when they've been out of college and proven themselves for over a year. You short the rest of us here when you do that.

    Pros

    The best thing about the company are the ground troops: the scientists, operations people, statisticians, and manufacturing people. They really care about the mission and the quality of their work. They're bright and talented people who want to make new medicines for patients.

    The salaries are good (but really average for the industry), and the benefits are industry standard. There's good free coffee and the company orders free lunches for noon meetings constantly, so there's always free food. Oh, and there's a movie theatre-style popcorn maker that makes really good popcorn. And a foosball table (but sadly, nobody has time to play).

    Cons

    - Senior management is pretty toxic, insulated, bullying, and micromanaging. Teams are not empowered, and are frequently whipsawed by the whims and fears of the executives who can't make a decision.
    - The bullying and fear-based culture has permeated the lower management ranks, meaning that things won't change without a wholesale change at the top.
    - So. Much. Process. It's nuts. As a result, people work very hard and are very but don't produce very much (slide decks do not equal productivity)
    - Currently, morale is very poor. The number of people leaving is higher than the number of new people coming in. Senior management appears in denial about low morale: they clearly don't want to talk about it or explore it (no employee surveys, no mechanism for people to provide feedback)
    - Any sense of being "cutting edge" or "willing to take risks" has long since evaporated since this company was at the forefront of a new technology. Fear of hurting the brand drives many decisions and limits exploration of new approaches.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Senior management needs to talk to the employees, otherwise the trickle of departures will accelerate. The entire corporate culture needs a reboot. Unfortunately, this can only be effective if it comes from the CEO, and that can only happen if he changes or if he puts the needs of the company over his own needs. The employees would value a functional culture and a sense of optimism far more than more swag or an over-the-top rock concert or holiday party.
