I have been working at Selfridges full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    - Fun, enjoyable, busy atmosphere
    - Commission to be made
    - Canteen and staff area ok

    Cons

    - Concessions treated like nobody's, no respect and not listened to
    - Customers can be rude due to 'luxury' branding
    - Security access is a joke. Security guards can be, and are, incredibly rude
    - Low pay, long unsocial hours (late shifts being 2-10.30pm)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Listen to ALL staff. Not just own bought but Concessions too as we work just as hard as anybody else!
    - Increase pay
    - Make yourselves known to staff.
    - Sort out inductions and store approvals with efficiency. Shouldn't take 3 months purely because of not being own bought.

I have been working at Selfridges

    Pros

Other than the fact I met a couple of nice people in the same position as me, I simply cannot think of any pros.

    Cons

There so many individual incidents if could write here but the list would be too long. So I'll select a few. Long hours, I got put on constant night shifts(1-10,2-11) with one unpaid break sometimes after two hours sometimes after 7 hours?! They decided out of the blue not to pay me when they said they would and pay me two months later, which can ruin your life for a small period of time. I was very ill and sick and got told to take more than the advised dosage paracetamol(dangerous and unhelpful) and told I was not allowed to leave. I was told to have a moment in the office as I was crying, one of the managers came in, never asked why I was crying if I was ok and told me to get out and on the shop floor because people's shifts were finishing. Most days included being patronised, spoken to with zero respect. Management is corrupt, has no organisational skills or in fact any relevant skills for the job. Staff below management are undervalued and there's a general feeling of over inflated self importance and a rather sad desperate sense of struggle to maintain image. I cannot stress how much I would NOT recommend working for Selfridges.

I have been working at Selfridges full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Fun and fast-paced shopfloor environment most of the time and you have the opportunity to meet some great people amongst colleagues as well as customers.

    Cons

Unprofessional or annoying managers who are mainly covering their own back-sides by following all the orders without questioning. Hard to put a message across or get things done differently, All about the "procedure" which is an unwanted term in innovative organisations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Read up about and follow the "Blue Ocean management" to reap the benefits of the staff's capability

    Pros

Staff discount generous, slightly subsidised canteen.

    Cons

Very poor communication. .concession partners treated poorly, long hours that change with little notice, poor work life balance. Store values given out but not adhered to by managers themselves. I wouldn't recommend employment to a friend

    Pros

Having seen the swan's furiously paddling feet beneath the water, Selfridges brand reputation as a great place to shop is it's only drawcard.

    Cons

    All image, no substance
Poor investment in technology and staff
    Unrealistic expectations of staff
    Poor planning
Lack of support for staff - even HR were broken and unable to cope

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your staff, make sure they have a work life balance and the tools they need to do their jobs.
LISTEN to your staff and learn from it
    Put processes in place
Get rid of the dead wood or give staff proper training to cope with the roles they are in

I worked at Selfridges full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Staff discount, colleagues were mostly friendly, good brand reputation, but clutching at straws...

    Cons

The hiring process took an agonising 2 months, when I finally started I could not access tills or essential areas of the building on the start date due to repeated IT & Security mishaps, Manager never told me actual shift times, rota, where the facilities are, you are on your feet all day with only 1 break, no coffee/tea facilities or nearby toilet, all for £20k a year...no thanks!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You cannot expect a Sales Associate to deliver a luxury experience if you do not adequately equip them to do so.
