Poor Management, old fashion culture, low pay & increment

    Engineer (Current Employee) Singapore (Singapore)

Pros"8 months Bonus" is claimed to be the biggest advantages/attraction for working in this company which becomes an valid excuse for the company to do a big pay cut for u.

ConsManagement is using “bonus" as a weapon to threaten employees to work massive overtime no matter you have finished your work or not.
What they like to say is "if you do not work overtime, don't complain if you get only 1-2 months bonus"
In fact, the bonus declared is just a show to public where the real bonus given is 1-3 months lesser than the announced amount.
Very less increment- the increment is only $50-100 per year (depends whether your boss likes u or not)
Less chance for promotion- promotion is based on the number of working years not capability, so it ends up with having seniors/managers having lesser knowledge than juniors.

Advice to Senior ManagementBonus is now really not an attractive point to employees since it is used as a threat and pay cut to basic. If senior management continues this kind of micro management and reluctant to listen young generation's feedback, this company will not be as competitive as Korean/China yard anymore.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

There seems to be some inherent problems.

Design Engineer (Former Employee) Singapore (Singapore)

ProsVery family like working relationship people are friendly.
Close proximity to mrt station as compared to other shipyards.
Good bonus but they are not to last.
Good place to learn ship repair and installation from the experts.
Independent learning and adaptation to responsibility, but a little too much.

ConsLow basic salary and very slow salary growth.
Does not retain talents, does not inspire talents to stay.
Scope of work for each department not well defined.
Too much tolerant for incompetent people.
Learning is sometimes suppressed by incompetent people who just wants new people to be responsible for things they dont know.
Career progression is different or suppressed in certain departments.
Receptible to feedbacks but takes no action to cost effective and productive improvement suggestions.
Too short lunch hours and not allowed to have lunch outside of lunch hours.

Advice to Senior ManagementTalent management is important. Succession planning is not useful when only incompetent people plans to stay. The bonus is not everything but a long painful wait, consider other forms of benefits.

The culture needs to change. Employees needs to be smarter and risk taking.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

    Not worth your time there.

Senior Design Engineer (Former Employee) Singapore (Singapore)

    Pros- people are generally okay.
    - free shuttle bus (but only 4 timings)
    -free to try out things.
    - interesting culture.

ConsExperience is from Engineering Department. (Design Office)

    - poor management of projects
    -short lunch hour.
    - senior design engineers, or even those more years there are lacking in knowledge to teach.
    - department forces you to input overtime sheet everyday. If you need to leave on time at 5.30pm, you will be questioned by your lead. Should you have some commitment on Saturdays, you will also be questioned for not coming and writing down on the over time sheet. Basically, you need to overtime to be seen as "working".
    - Canteen only has one store, nothing else. If you do not drive, be prepared to eat there for your work-life.
-Not allowed to place any personal stuff even standing calender on the table partition. You will be asked to remove it.
    - No one helps you to clear your desk litter bin. You have to clear it yourself.
    - Seniors cannot teach you much because they do not know much as well. Basically you have to figure out your self.
    - No internet access for six months until probation is over. For work purposes, you may need to justify fully why you need it.
    - The company only practice one early dismissal yearly on christmas eve. You can leave at 3pm. Other than that, Chinese New Year eve or New year's eve, it is full work day.
    - Feedback are not taken seriously. You will feel a waste of time during those formal feedback session.
    - Courses are all conducted in house. There is a training center that trains people. The trainer is the same trainer for many of the courses that you will go though. You do not get direct training from real industry trainers. So courses are nothing exciting or good about due to the lack of real industry lesson.
    - low pay rise.
    - bonus average 3-4 months.

Advice to Senior Managementlearn from other organisation that invest a lot on their staff. Invest on people and the people will in turn grow your investment. Do not micro manage on the small things such as overtime. These are working adults not children. Just as CEO looks at the bigger perspective of things, likewise should a manager.

Interesting and fast paced at times

    PMO Intern (Former Employee)

Proseveryday has its challenges and task to be done. Friendly people and management. People around are helpful but most are usually quite busy with their work. So a bit hard for them to find time to talk.

ConsCan be slow and monotonous at times. The day can just drag on and the work never ends. There will always be things to do. Management do not actively promote work life balance. But that is the culture in a ship yard.

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote more work life balance
