I have been working at Senior Living Communities

    Pros

The people are great. The residents can be nice. The end of the year bonus is like getting another paycheck.

    Cons

More and more work without increased pay. The management can be out of touch. The days can be really long.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on the important issues and listen to your staff more.

I worked at Senior Living Communities part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

I enjoyed the energy at SLC. They offered many different activities to the residents and kept things interesting for them. Residents were fun to interact with, and the majority of the staff were enjoyable to work with.

    Cons

The position could be stressful (but that's true of any server position).

    Pros

Great pay for management. Does not care for the working staff that provides direct care.

    Cons

You can be fired at a drop of the hat, if the CEO does not like you. You must be a stylish yuppy type person. Poor medical benefits: expensive, high deductibles. Leadership does not give good direction, they give demands and do it over the video phone. They are losing properties rather than gaining business.

I worked at Senior Living Communities full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Communities are beautiful. They are well maintained and located in great areas. Good emphasis on wellness with many good prgrams related to this. Most have indoor swimming pools.

    Cons

Staff treated very poorly with no respect. Upper management operates out of fear of being fired and micromanage to justify their jobs. Lower management must follow corporate guidelines to a tee. There is no felxibility to use the talents staff was hired for. There is a revolving door of employees. Executive Directors survive only if they are yes people and know how to play corporate politics. It is clear they do not want older workers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect the knowledge and experience of your managers and staff. Allow residents a real say in what goes on instead of assuming someone at home office knows better.

I have been working at Senior Living Communities

    Pros

The non-management staff. The members and residents are wonderful, the facility is beautiful. The team work among non-management staff is generally fantastic. We pull together and help each other "despite" the lack of support we receive from management.

    Cons

Over all, I was attracted to SLC because of their philosophy of personalized care and service. After being there for a year, I see a company that is floundering. Frequently, the "image" of personalized service is built on the backs of overworked, overstressed staff. We are expected to provide outstanding service, but the pay is lackluster, the staff is overtasked, and management does not trust in the staff. I want so much for them to be the company that they have the potential to be, but they have a very, very long hill to climb.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust the people who work for you. Trust the people who have hands-on contact with the members and residents. I promise-we know what we are doing! Respect the residents in the retreat. Respect and lift up the staff in the retreat! Go and visit them-offer to help with something. Visit with the residents in the retreat, listen to their concerns and address them.
