I worked at Sentry Insurance full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Good CEO who listens, has innovative ideas and, I believe, cares about the employees and where the company is going.
    - Benefits- 401(k). Outstanding 401(k). Best that I’ve seen – especially in this area.
    - Large company. You have the opportunity to advance if you work hard enough and get to know the right people.
    - Bonuses. Annual salary increase and bonus.
    - Great vacation package.
    - Job security.
    - On-site cafeteria with pro-rated meals (at home office).

    Cons

    - Employee trust. Employees are called “associates”, but we aren’t treated as such. There is little employee trust. Everything is very regulated, there is usually a need to acquire at least one manager approval before any decision can be made. Even going to the on-site gym on your lunch break needed a manger sign-off at one point.
    - Attitude. There isn’t a willingness/openness for change from tenured employees. Attitudes can be very negative and condescending. Unwillingness for cooperation. Too many cooks in the kitchen.
    - Benefits – Medical. Abysmal. They made slight improvements in the last few years, but for a company this size, you would expect much, much better.

    Pros

6% 401(k) match is the best benefit they have

    Cons

High deductible health plan coverage but employee rate on premium is on par with a much nicer plan. Poor value.

    Pros

The people/associates are excellent. Hard working and committed to the community.

    Cons

Politics, senior management, downsizing and extreme lack of diversity. Benefits are very poor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Sentry Insurance full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The company does great things for the community. There are a high percentage of good people working for the company. Good working conditions especially the Stevens Point home office. If you are looking for a career in politics you will have ample opportunity.

    Cons

Some IT areas, like the digital content management area, replace leadership and coaching with politics and dictatorship. If you are a business analyst or project manager you are at the mercy of the developers. The environment is highly political, everyone is CTA. IT is financed through internal payment from the business nitches, this payment method is counterproductive. This method is ancient; it has been proven over the many years to cause internal separation instead of a collaborative environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The digital content management area needs new management. No one wants to address the issues.

    Pros

Nice Golf Course, work from home wasn't bad

    Cons

Spend more time worrying about what you do with your cellphone than putting a competitive product on the street. I can't find one part of the country where they have a major presence including Wisconsin.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pull your heads out of your rears and listen to the experienced people you have not the bootlickers you have now or you'll be standing in unemployment.

    Pros

benefits are great. 18 days paid time off your first full year, 6% match on 401K. Able to change positions within the company somewhat easily. decent pay for the work.

    Cons

cubicle land. performance is reviewed based on quantitative measures that are not very relevant. Very conservative company that does not listen to suggestions from its employees. Morale tends to be fairly low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

find a better way to review employee performance

I have been working at Sentry Insurance full-time

    Pros

    - good benefits
    - great HR

    Cons

    - management is completely incompetent and upper management is completely oblivious to this somehow
    - technology is moving backwards in time. HQ uses technologies from the 80s and brags about it
    - for some reason (even though HQ is in the middle of nowhere and they cant seem to hire anyone with any relevant experience) they are letting good people walk out the door and promoting people that add no value to the organization
    - young managers/directors with no real world experience are running the show, I wouldn't bet on the long term success of the organization (which is already on the decline with its personal lines division closing down)
