    Pros

Great science. Really, genuinely nice people to work with in all departments. Benefits are solid and salaries tend to be on the high side. Location is easy to commute to.

    Cons

Promotions are hard to come by. People management is not a priority for the company, and some managers have very poor people skills. No 401(k) match.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a vision and communicate it.

I worked at Sequenom as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

The team I worked for was very knowledgeable and wanted to make an impact on the rest of the company in regards to Information Security and Compliance.

    Cons

Some of the employees there were not receptive to change. Going from a company with a small amount of employees (>300) to a huge boost of about 600+ within a couple of years there where a lot of disagreements from other units about our approach on security.

I worked at Sequenom full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great benefits, compensation, good holiday schedule, pretty offices.

Smart engineering/scientific types are abundant. People get to wear many hats making them even more proficient and productive.

I learned a lot, mostly by teaching myself.

    Cons

Management was inconsistent. Department heads do not listen to employees, push for an exponential amount of tasks to be completed with little lead time and a tighter, unrealistic deadline. Knee jerk reactions by upper mgmt would cause delays in meeting shipping orders.

Micro-management was unhealthy and anti-productive. Some departments seem to have a nice vibe amongst the employees. I envied that since my department was dysfunctional, too much Type A delusion of grandeur.

I didn't learn anything from mgmt related to my job. I only learned how not to treat people through observation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Really take into account peer reviews of your upper management.

I have been working at Sequenom full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great mid level managers and directors, great product

    Cons

Poor executive leadership. New CEO doesn't listen or pay attention to what's being said or never understands the topics presented. Too many VPs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring back Harry Hixons culture of work hard but have fun.

I have been working at Sequenom full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Intelligent group of skilled co-workers in the technical departments of the laboratory. Love the work I do, but can't do it for this company anymore.

    Cons

Management very out-of-touch with laboratory operations and promotions are difficult to come by. Lots of empty promises made upon start up of the company and start of employment. Difficult to advance and cross-train (unless you want to learn the work you're over-qualified to be doing). If you're very dedicated to your team, you'll be let down when other team members aren't as dedicated to getting the work done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Promote within.

I have been working at Sequenom

    Pros

    - Great benefits
    - Great team support

    Cons

    - No 401K matching
    - Stock has been stagnant, company is still financially struggling with proving to be leader in diagnostic testing (our competitor is catching up)
    - No more Friday happy hours. Not much employee recognition anymore

I have been working at Sequenom full-time

    Pros

The company employs vanguard molecular technology to offer crucial maternity assay. As one of the few providers, it's likely to enjoy substantial prosperity in the future. Technologists assigned to work in post-amplification modules, with next-generation sequencers, benefit from critical professional experience and stimulating workflow.

    Cons

Workload in pre-amplification modules is overwhelming. Staffing and equipment resources are lacking and with no clear signs of improvement. Executive projects are quixotic and pretentious, rather than utilitarian or motivating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listening to your employees is only half of the battle.
