    Pros

I agree that we're heading in the right direction. Some very good leadership and exciting new products. The future is bright!

    Cons

Some nay-sayers in the organization. There are many of us that want to focus on the future - not live in the past.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep coming up with new products for us to build and include us in the process. We want to be successful!!

I have been working at Serials Solutions

    Pros

Individual contributors are smart, caring people who work very hard to do the right thing and support customers

    Cons

Senior management is clueless and narcissistic. There is no long term vision other than what will get the next sale. Developers are seen as replaceable cogs in the machine.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop astro-turfing guys. Invest in your people and you will succeed. If you continue driving away the core of the company, you won't have one.

    Pros

    Talented co-workers and wonderful customers.

    Cons

Churn and lack of consistency within the management team. Companies ultimate goal is the bottom line. An aggressive/competitive environment encouraged. Toxic.

Positions itself well to outsiders, has a very loyal customer base but is not transparent or supportive of employees.

    I worked at Serials Solutions

    Pros

Co-workers are dedicated, fun and extremely competent. Atmosphere is casual and laidback dress code. Supportive of people working flexible hours.

    Cons

Poor salary compensation compared to the industry and region. Non-existent job advancement opportunities and no feedback from management on performance or expectations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Run this company as a software company should be run and you can be successful. Pay a fair salary and bring in management that understands how to run a business and not one that runs a business into the ground.

    Pros

Located in a great neighborhood. Office space is open cubes, but with light coming in from windows all around, it is pleasant. People doing the work are great.

    Cons

Senior management and executive leadership is completely clueless. Successive generations of failed leadership have destroyed a once great place to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leadership needs to recognize the talent they have before it all abandons ship. Focus on a coherent long term plan instead of the next quick sale.

I have been working at Serials Solutions

    Pros

People are great, casual atmosphere, great location, people are passionate about their products. Lots of knowledge around the library industry.

    Cons

If you're not into libraries or library software, it's not that interesting. Mid and senior management is weak and not strategic when it come to developing software. Products are very silo'd when they don't need to be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on the strategic value of product enhancements and don't let sales opportunities drive the product roadmap.

    Pros

Great line of products. Get to work with librarians. Nice location. (wildly profitably, although you'd never know it!)

    Cons

Was once a great company. New management following the sale of the company has sold out the soul of the company, and that's too bad. They treat employees and clients poorly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

turn the ship around! I hear the new guy is trying. Good luck. Hope he can do it.

Little direction, low morale, bureacratic processes

I worked at Serials Solutions full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Some very smart people, trying to do some cool things

    Cons

Office morale was very low. Existing staff were forced to work on unpleasant legacy code while cool new projects are outsourced to outsiders. Long meetings, little direction from management and no drive to create or protect an engineering culture or agile process. Bureaucracy has seeped in from the parent company driving morale down. Also attracting and retaining talent was very difficult because of low pay grades

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Deciding if this is really an agile, engineering-driven software company or just yet another branch of an aging publishing behemoth is key. If you want it to be a software company - you need to protect it from the forces of bureaucracy!

I have been working at Serials Solutions full-time

    Pros

Salaries are competitive, can't think of anything else.

    Cons

Mostly a sales company, does not understand or think like engineers. Does not innovate.
Takes no risks, very slow reaction to market forces due to the concept of rigorous, unfounded "budgets".
Antiquated and useless review systems (SuccessFactors for example).
Management doesn't know what it's doing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There should be less management with smaller egos, and more of an engineering culture.
