I worked at Shands HealthCare full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Depending on the department, employees can be congenial. Benefits are generally good. Pay depends on level of employment. Obviously if you're an RN with experience, MD, Manager, the pay is good. Otherwise, it all depends on the area & level of employment.

    Cons

Obviously, it's important to be evaluated by a manager/supervisor within your area of expertise. Obviously, tenure in any given area depends on the manager/supervisor. What is not obvious is who is evaluating who; in a large department, it may be that other employees are providing feedback that one does not know about or know that it's happening. Then again, if you've been there a long time and have friends who will give you a great letter of support to your supervisor ... sweet. It's an unlevel playing field, to say the least.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate; be fair; be 'above board' in providing feedback that is helpful to the employee.

    Pros

Mostly nice, professional coworkers. Great for students.

    Cons

Bad employees do not get fired. Work gets put on others because they sit around doing nothing and threaten to go to management with discrimination charges if they are censured.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to hire people with work ethic.

    Pros

Best Pay in Gainesville area, but after it where do you go?
EXCELLENT place to learn politics and how not to do things so you can be better employee at your following jobs

    Cons

To many to list, but keep in mind on any postive review that employees, the loyal ones, are actively asked to put out reviews and beef up the company. Keeping appearances is more important than actually fixing the problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Scrape the manamgnemnt down to mid-managers, ESPECIALLY in the IT deparment. Provide TRULY anonymouse reviews of managers and culture. Everytime that is done it somehow never gets re-done, I wonder why? You can't be in the Top 10 by just wishing it, you have to work at identifying your problems and fixing them. The great Gizo is the wrong direction, anyone that disagrees is fired. What kind of culture to you think that promotes?

    Pros

Great people to work for, helpful and very nice. Supervisors were very encouraging and always offering advice - a great learning experience.

    Cons

Initially fast-paced and somewhat overwhelming with the terminology, so you need to be able to pick up on things somewhat quickly.

I have been working at Shands HealthCare

    Pros

Shands is a very well respected academic hospital with a variety of highly ranked areas of medical care. In general it is a very good place to work and live.

    Cons

Gainesville, Florida is a small college town (this could be a pro), but in general the town can get a little boring unless you just want to settle down with your family.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Break down the silos between departments and clear out the waste.

Typical big hospital with a false culture of caring but an interesting place to work nonetheless.

I have been working at Shands HealthCare full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

A teaching hospital where learning is valued gives every employee the opportunity to expand their knowledge if they so desire. Shands takes on the complex cases no one else in the region can handle so although the patient acuity is high making care difficult, you will see really cool and unique things you just wouldn't see at a private hospital.

    Cons

Well, where to begin...you are a dime a dozen and there is a policy of considering everyone to be equal and replaceable. This promotes mediocrity. The only reason to try harder, be better and know more is your own person pride, you will NOT be more highly valued or paid than others and you will be disappointed to see coworkers who are borderline morons being treated and paid the same as you! As with any large hospital it's a level of bureaucracy matched only by the federal government.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ever hear of the Peter Principal? Google it. It applies to every manager I've had at Shands.

I worked at Shands HealthCare full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I really enjoyed my coworkers, both within the department and throughout the company. The vast majority of the senior leadership was wonderful and inspiring to work for and seemed dedicated to making Shands a great place to work. I was proud to work for a not-for-profit healthcare system that provided such amazing patient care.

    Cons

Work hours were often long in comparison to the salary. As with any healthcare environment, not every patient story has a happy ending, which I found emotionally difficult sometimes. Also, there wasn't a lot of upward mobility within our department.

I have been working at Shands HealthCare full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The front line employees are the strength of the organization and are a dedicated and hard working group. Most employees recognize their impact on patient care, even those that are in support roles. Shands has a large long-term employee base that are knowledgeable problem solvers. Employees are generally very helpful to their patients, visitors and co-workers.

    Cons

There was a takeover of the senior management team in 2009 and after three years it becomes clear that the new management team, lead (and micro-managed) by President and Chairman of the Board Dr. Gusick, is much less concerned about its employees. Shands management focus seems as though it is no longer a patient care organization, it is a physician care organization, frequently squandering millions to satisfy physicians' whims. Since this takeover, employee benefits have been routinely and systematically reduced or eliminated and the organization is actively trying to purge its longer-term employees, a group I've always felt was the strength of the organization.
