IT/IS is an unprofessional environment, I would not recommend.

I worked at Shands HealthCare full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are some nice people that work in IT/IS, the pay was decent and the benefits were good.

    Cons

Too many RN's managing IS/IT teams. They do not understand technology well enough to be in charge of it. Directors allowed team managers to behave in unprofessional ways and effectively did nothing to stop this type of behavior. It included unprofessional language, verbal attacks on people's character, and unprofessional behavior all around.

    Advice to Management

There are too many people in IT/IS who remain employed because they've been there for years, not because they do a good job, or have the required skill set. Unprofessional behavior runs rampant in the IT/IS area and should NOT be tolerated. There need to be more Directors/Managers with IT experience on the Epic project.

    Pros

    Most employees work hard.

    Cons

Disaster and complete misinformation throughout. Lack of leadership. Ask same questions to five employees, will get five different answers. Patients realized the decline of quality care.

    Advice to Management

Hire leaders with experience in successful entities to remedy situation now.

    Pros

The vast majority of employees really care about patient care. Complex health needs of patients, complex business environment, complex relationship with academic side. Rarely boring. Low turnover in most positions. Gainesville is a pretty nice college city, and not like most of urbanized Florida.

    Cons

Salaries and benefits for line employees keep declining, is no longer a "destination employer." Conversely, seems to be an excellent place to be a VP. Too much Studer influence (tightly controlled downwards communication, marching in step expected, divergent opinions not appreciated.) Could be Toyota-level crazy on continuous quality improvement, but mgmt unwilling to trust or empower employees to just do to. Low turnover in mgmt positions mean moving up is difficult. Moves slowly, as is true of most large organizations.

    Advice to Management

Take Deming to heart. Drive out fear. Support small cheap experiments.

    Pros

Shands provides steady employment for a good part of the city of Gainesville. The pay is fair and there is always an option for overtime.

    Cons

Shands keeps building new facilities and it seems that staffing gets cut with each addition. Better job for physicians and nurses than for staff positions.

I worked at Shands HealthCare full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Depending on the department, employees can be congenial. Benefits are generally good. Pay depends on level of employment. Obviously if you're an RN with experience, MD, Manager, the pay is good. Otherwise, it all depends on the area & level of employment.

    Cons

Obviously, it's important to be evaluated by a manager/supervisor within your area of expertise. Obviously, tenure in any given area depends on the manager/supervisor. What is not obvious is who is evaluating who; in a large department, it may be that other employees are providing feedback that one does not know about or know that it's happening. Then again, if you've been there a long time and have friends who will give you a great letter of support to your supervisor ... sweet. It's an unlevel playing field, to say the least.

    Advice to Management

Communicate; be fair; be 'above board' in providing feedback that is helpful to the employee.

    Pros

Mostly nice, professional coworkers. Great for students.

    Cons

Bad employees do not get fired. Work gets put on others because they sit around doing nothing and threaten to go to management with discrimination charges if they are censured.

    Advice to Management

Learn to hire people with work ethic.
