    Labor and Delivery is unrivaled

I worked at Shands at the University of Florida

    Pros

The team of doctors, nurses and support staff are wonderful both to work with and be patients of. Working as a nurse here has been the biggest privilege. The floor is like one big family.

    Cons

    None while I was there

I have been working at Shands at the University of Florida full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Teaching hospital, opportunities to learn. Rewarding job. Benefits are ok, and health insurance option of Gator Care gives a low cost option.

    Cons

Heavy patient loads, small work enviroment with a crowded work space, sometimes making it physically hard to get to your patients.once hired, salary becomes noncompetitive

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce turn over by increasing the salaries of current employees instead of just new hires. Remodel the ECC, it's unsafe and embarrassing.

I have been working at Shands at the University of Florida full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent ICU's with great education opportunities on very high acuity patients. If your looking to climb up the education ladder to CRNA or ARNP this is the place to do it!

    Cons

Our CICU is an older unit and gets a lot of hand-me-down equipment (beds and ancillary equipment). However, we are supposed to be getting a new tower for multiple ICU's including the Cardiac Unit. Pay is on the low side...but hey that's Gainesville....we've got people with master degrees bagging groceries at Publix!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We need the lift team 24hrs a day not just on day shift! We have way to many work related injuries that could have been avoided with better staffing.

I worked at Shands at the University of Florida full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The working conditions, the staff and the benefits to employees, students, community and the patients are top notch. The "Team" concept is evident throughout the entire facility, management listens to the concerns of the employees and acts upon it. Just a great place to be a part of. "Gator One" is a great perk for employees who choose to use it.

    Cons

Parking, Parking, Parking! It is ridiculous how hard it is to get good parking and you have to pay for it. Also if you work after 8PM bring your own food as everything shuts down...unless of course you are on a "Subway" diet...they are open all night but strangely enough they don't have coffee between midnight and 05:30.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

a "parking perk " for long term employees, say after 15 years of service parking is free or at the very least a substantially reduced rate....more consideration for the employees who work the overnight shifts as far as meals go.

I worked at Shands at the University of Florida as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Shands hospital is a teaching facility and as such provides many opportunities to scrub into exciting cases. There are two hospital: a general surgery and trauma center and a specialty surgery unit. You will so much.

    Cons

Pay is fair, as the cost of living in Gainesville is low. Overall, my experience was pleasant. The OR is a high stress area but everyone worked well together.

Former Employee - Patient Access Coordinator in Gainesville, FL

I worked at Shands at the University of Florida full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

It's a steady paycheck with ok benefits.
Gateway to other jobs in the hospital.
Don't have to pay to park your car like other hospital jobs.

    Cons

Management is biased and they have their favorites, if you're a guy forget it...you'll be discriminated against. Be prepared to receive on minimum 150 calls a day. Oh yeah, and all the Access Center is is a glorified call center. Extremely high turnover in this job. And back stabbers in every department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire all managers and get unbiased staff. Stop discriminating against men in this position. Managers should know how to do their employees job!

    Pros

As a new nurse they ARE hiring and don't make you go through a nurse residency program like many other hospitals, there are many opportunities to further your nursing education and they give a great orientation.

    Cons

Like any hospital different units are managed differently some are better organized than others. Also like any job there are politics both on units and in the larger nursing organization
