I have been working at Shaw Communications full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - GREAT people to work with. Love my fellow co-workers
    - very supportive management. Supervisors and manager of department extremely supportive
    - very approachable and understanding managers
    - good support environment if you need help
    - great benefits
    - commission is great
    - good training
    - always opportunities to cross departments
    - fantastic environment. Very friendly.

    Cons

    - customers are dumb. You will encounter the dumbest, and angriest people ever.

    - huge lack of advancing. Sure you can cross departments, but that's it. Going higher into supervisors and department managers is extremely unlikely, even trying to advance into a support position. Even more unlikely to advance into the office positions from the call centre

    - huge dissonance between the executives and people in the call center. We're kept in separate buildings, and although they're trying to go into the direction of customer focused, I don't think anyone besides Brad Shaw has ever taken a call

    - lack of transparency on issues

    - guilt trip you when you take days off

    - micro manage

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Department managers: good job

Everyone else higher: Take a day of calls. I dare you.

It seems to me executives don't even know how the company works apart from on a logistics level. It would be interesting to see the VP of marketing and promotions actually take a call in Loyalty, and tell me if our promotions and no contract are the right thing to do. Sometimes I think Telus does have it right with those contracts. Service agreements are dumb.

Get the VP of operations to speak to customers.

This should honestly be a requirement in the company now that everyone has to do some calls and TALK to customers if Shaw really does want to go towards a customer focused model.

    Pros

Good benefits and salary was ok. People were great. Many different positions to transition too.
Better to work hourly than salary.

    Cons

Double standards. I started to having medical issues and I started to have other issues they say they want to help but don't actually do it or mean it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep GREAT people.

    Pros

Shaw has above average medical benefits. The workplace has a casual atmosphere and the co-workers are friendly. Flexible scheduling if you can fit the work in the assigned scheduling...

    Cons

Management seems to have no appreciations for their employees. They expect you to handle huge work loads. Advancement is for the ones in the management click and not for the highly skilled or hard working employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't take employee for granted and give back a little.

I worked at Shaw Communications full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    • Salary is decent enough despite the competitor TELUS paying more.
    • Most of the tier two representatives were helpful.
    • Supervisors will help you if you work hard and are honest.
    • Paid vacation, bonuses, paid sick days (for full-time). Paid training for new hires.

    Cons

    • Schedule is very inflexible in the call center. If you cannot handle having to rotate your schedule every two weeks and work as early as 7am and as late as 11pm, then you will want to find somewhere else to work because even if you have seniority you will not have a say in your schedule at all. That being said, the supervisory team sometimes makes exceptions for employees that are students and work around their school schedule.
    • Very old and outdated tools being used. This really slows down efficiency. I had to apologize to customers and thank them for their patience as I tried pulling up their accounts and making changes. Sometimes it was so bad that I had to call them back so that they would not wait for too long.
    • At times we have a lack of coverage, and customers have to wait on hold for a long time.
    • Because Shaw does not have cell phone service, they cannot offer as good value as TELUS, so it can be very hard to retain customers because of this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider cellular phone acquisition, generate more income from that, use that income to upgrade your outdated tools, and hire enough staff for call center coverage. Other than that I love Shaw and appreciate everything that the good people there have done for me. I grew a lot here and started at a very young age.

I worked at Shaw Communications part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I had a chance to work at the customer solutions department in Vancouver. While the job can be tedious, it's rewarding in the things you will be able to learn from it. I left the company due to relocating to a different city that doesn't offer Shaw, but I have garnered lots of experience just by working there. If your ambitious and a go getter, you will definitely be a great fit for that department!

    Cons

Hours are okay, but you won't have much to get much accomplished after work.

I worked at Shaw Communications as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

It was a very chill work environment. I was given a solo project and left to handle it on my own. Pay to work ratio is great. Shuttle service and the food truck is a very nice perk.

    Cons

The job kind of felt like I was working on a side project since I was the only person working on it.
