    I worked at Shaw Communications

    Pros

Easy going, relaxed work atmosphere. Good cafeteria on site, meals are inexpensive. Building and equipment are mostly new and top of the line

    Cons

Poor location requiring significant commute. Salary not on par with other tele-communications companies, insufficient based on cost of living in Calgary. Management not understanding that when using public transportation one is sometimes at the mercy of the elements in Calgary

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your people on same level as competitors

I worked at Shaw Communications full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

It had good commissions combined with an hourly pay also excellent benefits as it was paid from the first day of employment.

    Cons

Very demanding & even aggressive when quotas weren't reached for the week. The office politics was atrocious & downright toxic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a more supportive environment as opposed to ruling with an iron fist.

    I worked at Shaw Communications

    Pros

benefits are great and the pay was decent. shaw tower is also a nice building to work in--to bad you rarely have time to relax and enjoy the view up there

    Cons

micro-managers are the worse. and this is the first company i've ever worked for that refuses to give out reference letters. the heck?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

you're not going to get more sales by posting sales made by team members everyday, every few hours. there's always going to be people at the bottom and you will end up killing morale.

I worked at Shaw Communications full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Unionized, although company is trying to change that. Pay scale decent for the time being. Good people to work with.

    Cons

After buying Global TV there has been nothing but downsizing and cutbacks. TV industry changing as a whole. Only half the senior people left in all departments. Seemingly no concerns about quality of work but only of money and cutbacks

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Most of all management that I knew are gone including station manager. Keep your head low.

I have been working at Shaw Communications full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits? I really don't know because I can't think of any from my 2 years working there besides meeting some people but the majority of the people were not very smart.

    Cons

Low salary, high school grads running the show and mostly hiring individuals that are very narrow minded. In other words, they want to play the political game. Every year, there are layoffs and I am glad these layoffs are there but what sense are there if they are re-hiring these people that they are laying off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please sell to Rogers and let this thing go and be over with. The company is family run and has no respect for it's employees unless you are way up there with Jay.

I have been working at Shaw Communications

    Pros

Salary is good for a student

    Cons

No work-life balance or empathy for a full time student. Expected to work until midnight when I have school early the next day. No time to study either. They frankly don't care about students or anyone trying to better themselves. They only care that you do your job the way they like it.
The company delivers terrible service to it's customers, I listen to the same complaints about their products over and over again. They expect their employees to take the fall for their awful products and service and get yelled at, rather than rectifying the problems.
The job itself is emotionally draining. Customers are demanding and rude. We are expected to have a 2 minute maximum break in between calls and in that time we are expected to finish notes on the account or complete service calls or post work orders. The company doesn't care about our emotional well being or the fact that we get yelled at all day by customers who are fed up with their horrendous service.
They make their employees feel like numbers and that we can be replaced at any given time without thinking twice.
I also received inadequate training. I'm expected to teach myself everything at this job while demonstrating a positive, can do attitude to rude customers.
Shaw needs to take responsibility for their awful service so call centre representatives don't need to take the fall for it.
Shaw is also aware of the various flaws their products has but continues to sell them.
I hate selling things to customers because I feel terrible knowing that within a couple weeks or even days they will face problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop expecting us to do everything!
And also hire people who are educated and actually know a thing or two, not just people with years of experience.

I worked at Shaw Communications as an intern

    Pros

    Atmosphere is fun and friendly
    Oppotunity to try new departments
    Supportive
Learn on the job and brief training

    Cons

Volunteer forever and never get a paid job ie. 2 yrs for some
Management seems to hire mostly caucasian especially those on television
Producer is the head honcho and once you're on his bad side, its over

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire majority non-caucasian for a change. Don't tell volunteers you can get a job if you do the work.
