I have been working at Shaw Industries full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

They pay well and promote from within and run a taught ship so that good hardworking employees have jobs. If you are lazy - this is not the place to work. If you work hard - go for it!

    Cons

Very traditional set-up. A better family/life work balance is needed. Something to discuss before you are hired there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to identify a family life work balance. It can be better.

Current Employee - SCG Contract Specialist in Cartersville, GA

I have been working at Shaw Industries full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Busy, steady, get breaks(long enough to only go to the toilet). HR dept (very, very rude, non-confidential, promote their friends, makeup phony cases to prevent promotions). Promote(people who are trashy, wear clothes with breasts revealing & TMs complain don't handle their work).

    Cons

Pay is lousy, lousy, lousy. Not a living wage. Can't afford medical copays. No advancement unless friends with management. Workload extensive for time to complete; thus errors and then you're dinged. . Most mgrs unbelievably dumb, few with college degrees; no promoting those with degrees then. Solicit PI/PA requests then do not implement or steal your ideas & give you no credit. 2 10 min. breaks a day - leaves you time to go to the toilet and that's it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire mgrs with a brain instead of those who think talking in circles is intelligent. Too many layers of management. Hire people who have a sense of urgency - most product doesn't get out the door because the work ethic is too Southern - too SLOW.

    Pros

Paid weekly, decent benefits, flexible with workers who go to college

    Cons

    repetitive job tasks. Very robotic

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop asking as if your job is tough. What's tough is taking 200 calls a day from people who are rude.

I have been working at Shaw Industries full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The security that comes from working for a company backed by Warren Buffet is nice. The only thing that beats that is a salary hourly position-yes paid OT. The Brand teams are smart and are utilizing the expertise of some talented and smart agencies. Great benefits. Lots of sincerely good people.

    Cons

Misplaced Management. Too many unqualified people in leadership positions. Lack of process and follow through. Reactionary. (Departmentally specific)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Survey departments/divisions (not just a multiple choice survey). You are missing vital feedback.

I worked at Shaw Industries full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Competitive pay for area. Good managers. Good benefits.

    Cons

Like any real world corporation they need you for the hours you are hired. If you are late or out so many times they will write you up, but that was no a problem for me. The biggest down side was no sick time. If you/child are sick you had to use vacation days or accrue an occurrence (point)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People genuinely get sick. Sick days would be a big plus. And training new managers without promoting the trainers into management position gets discouraging. College degrees are not the Holy Grail

    Horrible

Current Employee - Plant Worker  in  Cartersville, GA
Current Employee - Plant Worker in Cartersville, GA

I have been working at Shaw Industries full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

At this point, I can't think of any.

    Cons

If you are on 2nd or 3rd shift, good luck making it to 1st.

Plant workers reach level 3 and the vast majority will never receive another raise.

They will schedule 7 day work weeks at the drop of a hat, even weeks immediately preceding Christmas.

Equipment (especially computers and lift trucks) are left in disrepair for months at a time. No one is on staff at the plant to keep the computers working.

If you ask for any kind of understanding for a particular situation, forget it. You can work here 5 years or be fresh out of orientation, it doesn't matter to them.

Employees are merely files in drawer, numbers to be cut and necessary evils to upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your employees feel it when you consider them to be no more than an expense. Your reward for a year of profitability, Pride Day (actually 1 1/2 hour), is terrible - a very few get a little prize and most leave with nothing. It's insulting. If you want to show your appreciation, write checks; do not set up a ring toss.

You have cut labor yet spend money on ridiculous programs and positions.

Show us a little respect by scheduling more thoughtfully and do not pretend to show appreciation with Pride Day or food.
