Pros
Flexible schedule
Upper management is very accessible and approachable.
Birkshire Hathaway Co (financial backing)
Cons
Poor Regional Management
Low compensation compared to direct competitors
Not an innovative company. "Stuck" in their dated ways of thinking.
Majority of employees are "senior". Do not hire many or enough young people.
Advice to Senior Management
Very limited opportunity for growth without moving to GA. And very few employees under 35 in the company. More young employees need to be hired and promoted so fresh new ideas can be brought to the company. The "old boys club" days are long over. Many more women need to be promoted. There are an extremely low number of women in upper management positions. The company is anything but diverse.
Pros
BK Hathaway =stability even in tough economy
Cons
Industry economic slow down - not the fault of management
Advice to Senior Management
get into the trenches more
Pros
I enjoyed the hands on experience I gained
Cons
I wish I could've been stationed in more than one plant.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to the guys on the floor, and you'll always succeed.
Pros
Competitive pay compared to other companies in the industry. Training opportunities are excellent though you may not even use them. Some of the locations are accessible.
Cons
Horrible benefits. No sense of employee worth. Poor management seems to be a company wide problem. Be prepared to go to work with one hand tied behind your back. Cronyism.
Advice to Senior Management
Shaw Industries has great employees. Start by taking better care of your hourly help, they are the ones whos back your riding on. Upper management has an uncanny way of hiding things from corporate. Very top heavy.
Pros
Company is focused on making a quality product.
Great if you benefit from nepotism and/or getting promoted for who you know instead of what you know.
Cons
Nepotism/cronyism/politics run amuck. You better be a "yes" man/woman.
Upper managers make decisions strictly based on perceptions and not reality.
The truth is viewed as "excuses" with most of the uninformed upper management.
Extremely top heavy. The company will cut labor/cost to the bone at the plant (manufacturing) level, but retain and add less effective support staff at the corporate level.
Middle/upper management become too involved in the decision making at plant level preventing dept. managers from effectively doing their jobs. Too many masters to serve.
Advice to Senior Management
Get rid of the managers that play the political games. The company should focus on cutting less effective labor at the corporate levels during tough times instead of solely focusing on reducing labor at the plant level. Make sure your upper/middle management is aware that they are their to support the plants, not the other way around.
Pros
You will have the opportunity to meet some nice and interesting people while working there. The compensation is good enough.
Cons
There doesnt seem to be much room for growth and the company is not expanding anymore. Not a great place for a career.
Advice to Senior Management
They should be more involved with the people working on the factory floor. This would fix a lot of their problems.
Pros
I became a much more seasoned manager working for Shaw Industries. The people truly make the difference.
Cons
Internal programs such as safety become very laden with duplicate paperwork. The safety message has become 'lost in the wash' in comparision to other companies.
Advice to Senior Management
Simplify the Safe System if you really wish to have employee 'buy in'.
Pros
In this era carpet complanies pay well, shaw is one of the best I think, they offer insurance like medical, and Life. Through shaw I had gain some techniques to better me as a leader.
Cons
It may take forever to up the ladder in this company. Most of this is mainly who you know rather than the knowledge and experience you have attained. sorry for my misspeling I am in a hurry.
Advice to Senior Management
Saftey is key gentlemen
Pros
- Company with deep pockets
- Work / Life Balance
- Company cares about the local community
Cons
- Benefits have become sub-par over time
- Many I.S. employees aren't require or have 4-year college degrees
- Management sets unattainable sales targets in order to not achieve employee bonus triggers
- Company is still living in the 1980s when it comes to experience or knowledge in critical departments
- Tons of dead weight exist in key management areas
- Hiring from outside areas is frowned upon in many departments
Advice to Senior Management
(1) Step up and removed management level associates that are not getting to job done.
(2) Start purchased outside software instead of having internal developers drop the ball time after time.
(3) Start thinking outside the box and stop thinking the "Shaw Way" is always the best way.
Pros
The work life balance is great
Cons
Limited growth opportunities. Turn over is extremely low.
