    Pros

Great experience, learned a lot, unique work environment

    Cons

Not too many cons, other than unpaid internship, but that's known before going into it. Great experience makes up for not being paid.

I worked at Shedd Aquarium full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Free, though limited, admission to local attractions. Free admission to aquarium. Small discounts at aquarium stores and restaurants.

    Cons

Extremely top heavy management. Very cliquey environment. Abysmal compensation. Minimal opportunities for employee growth. High employee turnover rate. No training.

    Advice to Management

Decrease the amount of unnecessary VPs and managers, not everyone needs to be a boss. Properly train employees. Compensate employees appropriately.

I worked at Shedd Aquarium (More than a year)

    Pros

With constant rotation of co-workers if you do not like someone you may not have to deal with them for long, the fringe benefits are nice

    Cons

low pay compared to other museums in chicago; terrible treatment by mangers who are out of touch, clicky, and rude and they will lie about you to save their own butt from their mistakes; no upward movement; they are not flexible for people who want to go back to school; treated so, so, so, so poorly by the public and managers will never back you up if customers are out of control; sales ambassadors are never staffed properly; and when assistant manager or manager positions open up they are never given to the hard working employees but to employees who barely do any work.

    Advice to Management

Stop lying about your employees to cover your mistakes, understand that employees have lives and be willing to work around it.

I have been working at Shedd Aquarium full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

'Soft Benefits' Great Health Benefits Awesome 401K match (especially for a non-profit) Good PTO policy You can see the results of all your hard work. It is a small organization at heart. All of the animals get the absolute best care possible, and it is so great to see that the animals always come first. The animals are never over-worked, forced to do anything they don't want to do, and always trained with positive reinforcement. The people at Shedd are great! They make coming to work everyday enjoyable. This is the only place I have worked throughout my career where I leave in a better mood than when I came in. Many industry-experts are here at Shedd, and it is cool to be surrounded by them daily.

    Cons

Top heavy leadership which leads to a large compensation gap Can be slow-moving to get something done Many old processes that are not efficient still in place Many people resist change

    Cons

Not any negative aspects to working here except public transportation can be difficult.
