I have been working at Shedd Aquarium full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    'Soft Benefits'
    Great Health Benefits
    Awesome 401K match (especially for a non-profit)
    Good PTO policy

You can see the results of all your hard work. It is a small organization at heart. All of the animals get the absolute best care possible, and it is so great to see that the animals always come first. The animals are never over-worked, forced to do anything they don't want to do, and always trained with positive reinforcement.

The people at Shedd are great! They make coming to work everyday enjoyable. This is the only place I have worked throughout my career where I leave in a better mood than when I came in. Many industry-experts are here at Shedd, and it is cool to be surrounded by them daily.

    Cons

Top heavy leadership which leads to a large compensation gap
Can be slow-moving to get something done
Many old processes that are not efficient still in place
    Many people resist change

I worked at Shedd Aquarium as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

It was a great working environment with people who are flexible, passionate about what they do, and a pleasure to work with. I worked as a summer intern aquarist (that turned into a longer stay) and they groomed me to be able to take care of the exhibits for a few days on my own. The support and encouragement is great, and it's a great foot in the door if that's the career path you'd like to take. They also had weekly educational training sessions for interns which I thought was great. The hours weren't bad either, I started at 7 and was done by 3.

    Cons

It's unpaid, but you know that from the application. And you have to pay for parking. Promotions are difficult unless your timing is perfect and an aquarist needs to leave for whatever reason. But if you're in the right place at the right time, you're in. It's just most aquarists love what they do and will stay on for decades, so there aren't many opportunities to come on board.

I worked at Shedd Aquarium part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

You always leave feeling like you're part of a bigger cause. Benefits are great if you can land a full-time job.

    Cons

Pay is horrible. People who have worked their for over 20 years have maybe seen their paycheck grow $7 because of their yearly 2% raises. Full time doesn't mean salary either so you work per hour, which would be fine if they didn't cut your hours down to 30 hours per week and hire hundreds of teenagers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your employees, especially the ones that are extremely knowledgeable. If you lose them, you just have a bunch of kids that will give your guests wrong information and call dolphins fish or something.

I worked at Shedd Aquarium as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The Shedd's culture is great! Everyone is nice and customer service friendly. Employment perks are great as well. Free admission to all Chicago museums and discount on parking and food.

    Cons

There was very little guidance in my role as an intern. I was bored most of the time and the work I did (assemble training folders, set up training rooms, sent reminder emails, update calendar) as you can see required very little skill. Gained no skills, only learned how to do captivate and it was self-learning.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The experience was nice but the internship program needs more development, in HR anyway.

I worked at Shedd Aquarium full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people who work at Shedd are dedicated and passionate about what they do. The programs offered to the public are top-notch and education-focused. There are numerous perks to employees and teams become close. Compensation is fair.

    Cons

It's top-heavy in management. There are quite a lot of VPs and Exec VPs. Not many people leave, so advancement is difficult. You also tend to put in a lot of overtime in salaried positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You should consider creating a position for an employee advocate.
