ProsPeople here are very nice and helpful. They are willing to accommodate your academic requirements, schedules, and needs. They also provide a great program and benefits throughout the internship. It is a great way to build connection with people in the field as well.

ConsI have nothing bad to say.

Great company, gained little transferable skills

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsThe Shedd's culture is great! Everyone is nice and customer service friendly. Employment perks are great as well. Free admission to all Chicago museums and discount on parking and food.

ConsThere was very little guidance in my role as an intern. I was bored most of the time and the work I did (assemble training folders, set up training rooms, sent reminder emails, update calendar) as you can see required very little skill. Gained no skills, only learned how to do captivate and it was self-learning.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe experience was nice but the internship program needs more development, in HR anyway.

    Favorite job ever

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsThe people who work at Shedd are dedicated and passionate about what they do. The programs offered to the public are top-notch and education-focused. There are numerous perks to employees and teams become close. Compensation is fair.

ConsIt's top-heavy in management. There are quite a lot of VPs and Exec VPs. Not many people leave, so advancement is difficult. You also tend to put in a lot of overtime in salaried positions.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou should consider creating a position for an employee advocate.

    Amazing Company Culture

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsAmazing culture to work within and complete and internship with. It's generally a fun, fast-paced environment where employees truly enjoy their work, and while working there you really feel that you are contributing to something bigger than yourself. I learned a lot in my internship position. Very nice perks for employees and interns.

ConsAt times work could get monotonous. Internships are unpaid.

A fun place to work because of the animals and programs, but a bit corporate on the inside.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThey make a good effort for work/life balance in most departments
    EXCELLENT benefits from HR
Fun place to work with mostly enjoyable co-workers

ConsLeadership / Management tends to play favorites and is very political
Work / life balance can suffer in certain departments
Low pay and no room to negotiate
    High turnover in certain departments

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep the great benefits and work / life balance going strong
Make salaries more competitive with other cultural institutions in Chicago
The constant political posturing and changing of programs won't help the institution in the long run

    Positive and Team-Oriented

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsWorking at Shedd, you're rarely unhappy. Though being an unpaid intern for a non-profit is typically less than ideal for young students looking to break into the job market, the experience gained at Shedd and work environment is well worth the effort if you make the most of the experience. The internship program is very well organized and designed to provide interns with as much feedback and networking opportunities as possible. Interns, be sure to attend events, Brown Bags, Office Hours, and classes!!

ConsUnpaid, but really you get what you make of it and can earn credit for internships, so it evens out.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep it up!! Please encourage managers to schedule time for interns to go to office hours and classes. Make those opportunities a priority.

A fun-loving environment, but needs a little more competition.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsThe people are great and the management is very willing to give career advice to new employees. I really enjoyed working here.

ConsThere was not a lot of opportunity to move up in the company.
