Houston, TX

Current Employee – been working at Shell Oil US full-time for more than 7 years

ProsTheir benefits are really good if you've worked there a long time. The work is ok, and the salary is competitive. Everyone does their own little part. Sometimes you get to do different types of work because they have offshored some jobs(and that never works out because of time zone issues, communication issues, etc). Shell cares more about safety/training/compliance than anything else(especially making money).

ConsIt's very bureaucratic. If the benefits are the one of the biggest pros, it doesn't say much about Shell. You'll never feel empowered to do much because you'll be restricted by 20 other departments, half of which have been outsourced. It's not a good place unless you're an engineer. Everything else is getting offshored, outsourced or eliminated.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe IT department is ruining the company with its bureacracy. Shell is also wasting too much on consultants.

ProsIt was alright - not bad hours. the gym is actually pretty nice. the new buildings will be nice as well and the cafeteria isn't too bad

Constoo much beauracracy at the place -- i would try and have the young people in higher positions than they are currently placed in. ugly buildings (old ones)

ProsNice people with much to offer entry level workers

ConsHigh bar to hurdle in order to interview and get in

Advice to Senior ManagementInterview everyone you can and then make a decession on the best candidates. GPA is not always the best factor to figure in this set of circumstances

Mobile, AL

Former Employee – worked at Shell Oil US as an intern for less than a year

ProsPay for interns is fantastic. Overall Shell spends a lot of resources on their internship program. Working for a world class company like Shell carries a lot of weight with other employers. Internship projects tend to be challenging. Exposure to the oil and gas industry.

ConsKind of sink or swim mentality. Most people are way to busy to help out. Much of the evaluation for getting a full-time job really isn't relevant to the actual work you actually do (CART). Can get stuck in an undesirable location where there isn't much to do or other interns (Mobile, AL). Long hours.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe internship program is highly centralized (it's all run from Houston), but the positions are spread across the country. Those conflict too much; it's time to choose one or the other. I also got the sense that the people I was working with didn't really want an intern and that HR had sort of forced one on them. That obviously is going to make it less likely for their to be a positive experience for both employer and employee. Also at the end of the internship, no feedback is really given. You either get a job or you don't. People can only guess what they did well and what they didn't without it. I know HR is very fond of giving as little information out to job candidates as possible out of fear of being sued, but people deserve better than that.

Houston, TX

Current Employee – been working at Shell Oil US full-time for more than 10 years

ProsShell is committed to Diversity and Inclusion, and I have enjoyed and appreciated the freedom to bring my "whole" self to work everyday, focus on my job and not on maintaining a "cover story". That takes up a lot of energy and feels so disingenuous, relationships with coworkers and teamwork suffer. The opportunities available at this company are amazing, as are the people.

ConsProbably the same complaints that most large companies have...too many policies, procedures, and processes intended to streamline and simplify, but often having the opposite effect...or so it seems when you are the one trying to get the task done. Working globally is a challenge...very early or late teleconferences at times, but that also goes towards the pro side on the work flexibility aspect. Working from home, flex work schedules, etc... Big plus.

Advice to Senior ManagementI sure have seen a lot of people retiring the last few years...some of them were forced into it by reorgs and outsourcing and others are just aging out. What is the average age at Shell? Are we going to have the staff we need in 5, 10, or 15 years with the right training and skills? I hope Mgmt isn't thinking they can just pluck these people off the street a dime a dozen or contract everything out.

Current Employee – been working at Shell Oil US full-time for more than a year

ProsOverall, the benefits are good. They are not the best in the industry, but they do still have a pension plan. 401k match is ok, not great, for the first few years of your career here. 9/80s are good, as is vacation which helps with work/life balance. Many opportunities to work all over the world. Safety is important here.

ConsIt is a large company so it is difficult to learn all of the ins/outs. Takes forever to get responses from IT and HR. It is difficult to push management to try different approaches and ideas (i.e. it's the Shell Way only).

Houston, TX

Current Employee – been working at Shell Oil US as a contractor for more than a year

ProsVery refreshing to see a company with such a healthy attitude about work/life balance. For such a huge corporation, it doesn't feel like someone is hovering over me, asking WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY. I've been here a year and still amazed at how many times I'm thanked for just doing my job. I'm able to contact whoever I need to help me get my job done, without having to go through the chain of command In my position here I actually feel like I'm making a difference and a positive contribution to the company.

ConsWorking as a contractor with a 2 year limit. No degree, no conversion. :(

Current Employee – been working at Shell Oil US as a contractor for more than a year

ProsSmart, capable co-workers, decent pay and benefits, 9/80 work week, large budget when working on projects as opposed to when working with smaller E&P's, company has integrity and prides themselves on doing things the right and legal way, stability of long-term work

ConsWorking environment and conditions are poor, not much time for a personal life when working here because of the unrealistic work-life balance expectations, buildings at Woodcreek campus are in very poor shape and working conditions are over-crowded, often 2-4 people in small offices or cubicles--or just a table with 4 workstations set up, no room for personal belongings or maps (personal space is a luxury that you won't get at Shell), scarce parking, no team building activities or even a holiday party, expect strict business acumen and high stress.

Advice to Senior ManagementEngage with employees more in a human way, try not to foster such a workaholic environment (by sending emails to staff late at night and on weekends, have more social activities for employees to loosen up occasionally, show more appreciation for employees' diligent efforts, work is work but Shell could use more fun activities like the last company I worked for had (I miss the camaraderie and where people treat each other well). Please stop fostering the idea that contractors should be treated like second-class citizens. Stop cramming people into tight spaces and making employees/contractors work in musty, mildewed offices.
