I worked at Shell as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

    Great real life work experience
Felt like part of the team and my work was meaningful for the company
Very nice people! everyone willing to meet and give career advise
9/80 time off schedule allows every other friday off! Best thing ever!!

    Cons

Sit at your desk all day besides the occasional meeting.
Very low amounts of interaction with others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Very distant from the lower workers.
Only talked to my supervisor, didn't know or seem interested in any members of the team that did the behind the scenes work.

  2.

I have been working at Shell as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

Looks great in your resume. A lot to learn on your own. If you are no more than 2 years to get your college degree can lead you to another internship; otherwise no renewal of internship.

    Cons

Hard to find affordable housing. Lack of training: You are given a computer and manuals and do it yourself. You are suppose to know as much as a Doctor in your field. Very little support from buddy or supervisor. A lot of books to read. Hostile work environment. Not friendly at all. Process oriented. Poor training. Expect a lot from you. Advancement is based if they like you or not. Intern salary really low for a big oil company. No housing provided so you are on your own with only $5,000 allowance (not enough money to help you with relocation and housing). No life work balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please do not put young recent college graduates with no experience as buddies or supervisors since they do not know hot to treat interns with respect and they do not have enough technical knowledge to train interns.

I have been working at Shell full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

great benefits and networks for employees

    Cons

Could do better in company communications. Senior leaders change over frequently. open resourcing is quite elaborate but if you are not the chosen one it takes and act of congress to land a new position

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    none

Not a positive experience for contractors, great for direct employees.

I have been working at Shell full-time

    Pros

As a Contractor - Learn quickly in short period of time b/c you either sink or swim. The ability to put Shell on your resume....does wonders. You have the opportunity to make many connections throughout Shell. As an Employee - great pay, benefits, etc. Overall, I think Shell is a great company for its direct employees. As a contractor you have to go in with the mindset that it is a tremendous stepping stone to greater opportunities.

    Cons

Very defined line between contractors vs direct hire employees. Expect to be a "work horse" as a contractor, with no acknowledgement or reward other than being allowed to enter the building the next day. Management couldn't care less if you stay or leave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take more notice in the ENTIRE team. Contractors know that they are contractors. That does not mean you have to treat them as less than when it comes to opinions, changes in job positions, etc. Treating your ENTIRE team with respect and making EVERYONE feel that they are contributing to the groups success makes for a better work environment, less turn over, and most importantly, falls in line with the Shell values of integrity and respect.

    Pros

Great compensation, and diverse job opportunities. Reasonable work life balance, depending on the type of career you are looking to have.

    Cons

If you are looking for advancement, there is less opportunity to balance work and career. More "Europe focused" leadership and development.
