I worked at Shepherd Center part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are wonderful programs that benefit the patients as well as the families. The hospital staff work well together as a team and for the most part it is a friendly place to work.

    Cons

Management is often the cause of a lot of tension in the work place due to inadequate communication skills with the staff. The miscommunication ranges from contributing unwarranted input on patients they are not familiar with to sweeping obvious staff retention issues under the rug. There is also an air of mistrust that causes a lot of perception problems and often forced resignation or termination of a staff member which increases the staff retention issue - it's a vicious cycle that upper management is hopefully taking note of in their assessment of the hospital's programs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Things really need to be shaken up in the middle management area. Most have been there for more than a decade and are stuck in the way that things have worked. Granted Shepherd Center has done some groundbreaking things in the area of TBI and SCI rehab but that does not mean there is no room for improvement. Value and trust the people you hired to do their job and to contribute new things to your organization as we learn from the old ways you have perfected. I don't want to see a top establishment topple because employee input on management was ignored and labeled as "pot stirring". Train your middle management on how to be managers so that professional growth is facilitated which can only improve the organization in the long run.

I worked at Shepherd Center full-time for more than a year

    Pros

A comfortable atmosphere with friendly co-workers

    Cons

The Shepherd's, Management and HR does not truly value it's employees and the heart and soul they put into their positions, nor do they stand up for them in situations that end up being nothing but "finger-pointing" from an upset client. They assume the worse and don't even look back once their decisions in haste end up ruining a person and their family.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You valued your employee enough to hire them. When an issue may arise, LISTEN to your employee, WORK with your employee and RESPECT your employee and do not just assume the worst and turn your back on them. After all you chose them to represent your organization for a reason...

I have been working at Shepherd Center full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Individuals are able to contribute and make a real difference, the culture is not so "corporate".. The care is very much patient-centered. The facility is extremely clean. Generous employer contribution to 403b.

    Cons

Marginal employees are not effectively managed, and are not held accountable, The benefit plan is mediocre.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Clean out the dead wood.

I worked at Shepherd Center full-time

    Pros

Sometimes you meet really nice patients and family members. And depending on job performance and/or seniority, there are decent bonuses.

    Cons

Family members should make their prescence known a little more to ensure there is always excellent customer service provided at all times. Unit Managers and HR Managers are friends there, so its hard to get a fair opinion or treatment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Its time to make some major changes within the organization. Starting from HR Directors/Managers, Employment Benefit Managers, down to Unit Managers especially those Unit Managers who are in control of more than one department. Its time for cultural diversity and an overall architectural makeover. Time for newer systems, less paperwork, new faces in upper management, and fair opportunities in upper level management to everyone outside of the clicks.

I have been working at Shepherd Center

    Pros

Salaries are decent. Upper management is very approachable, even the CEO. I have been treated fairly. Advancement opportunities are fair.

    Cons

Not fond of the insurance (medical coverage). It seems slanted toward the younger employees. The average nurse is in his or her 40's. They need to re-evaluate the coverage. The dental coverage has been really good this year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remain approachable and stay transparent. That is your strength and niche in the marketplace of Atlanta. It has been overall a great place to work.

I worked at Shepherd Center full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Excellent place for patients. Staff sometimes went out of their way to make the patients and family members comfortable and treated them like royalty.

    Cons

External customers were sometimes treated way better than internal customers (employees). Some managers are very vindictive and some male charge nurses got away with alot more than they should have. Human Resources staff wasn't very friendly at all. It depends on your position or maybe how you look to be treated fairly there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior level managers need to be on the floors more often to see whats really going on. Do surprise visits at night if you have to and listen to everyone, not just the people who have been with the company for years.
