    Pros

Love the patients, love my coworkers, love getting up and going to work every day -- very challenging and rewarding place to work, and for an entry level position just out of college, it was perfect for me. Now that I am returning to school to become a medical doctor, however, the hours are not manageable with my school schedule and supervisors are reluctant to work out a fixed schedule for school.

    Cons

Hospital is perpetually understaffed; people come and go very quickly (high turnover rate among staff); frequent mandation, so I end up working 60+ hours per week when I was hired for 40; also, the pay feels too low for the amount of work we do...we are part of nursing staff and so are in constant contact with patients, providing support and mediation, crisis intervention and positive reinforcement; we run groups, etc. Our pay is between $21,000 and $25,000 a year, though. It is an entry-level position so we are discouraged from taking sick days; if you don't have PTO you have to go without pay for that day. Also they don't really care if you have family emergencies -- you will be fired if you choose to leave in such circumstances. Also, not much room for growth.

    Advice to Management

Please treat nursing staff with the same care and consideration extended to patients. If we are unable to take care of ourselves, mentally and physically, we cannot properly look after the patients. The high turnover rate is due to burn out; employees frequently report feeling exhausted, depressed, anxious and run down. Something needs to change.

    Pros

Sheppard Pratt is a great place to gain experience working with the mental health population, they have a diverse population to work with including at ages. The staff is easy to work with and there is never a dull day.

    Cons

The lady in charge of volunteers and interns is not always the best person to go to for any problems or issues.

    Pros

Working for one of the most prestigious independent mental health hospitals in the country. Great at hiring new grads, but more of a con than a pro due to high turnover.

    Cons

Poor staffing, frequent use of mandation to solve staffing issues that are known well in advance. No float pool. Some staff are allowed to show up late, sometimes by hours, so when it's time to go home you're stuck waiting for your replacement to show up.

It's already hard work - dealing with acutely mentally ill patients - but top it off with poor management (lackey yes men, who lack leadership or skills to innovate or improve workplace), a culture that promotes staff burnout, high employee turnover, and mediocre pay.

    Advice to Management

Bring more leadership into the managerial ranks.

    Pros

Good benefits, plenty of hours to work, flexible schedule options, adequate training & continuous education. Decent leadership and opportunity for advancement.

    Cons

Employees who do not deal well with psych patients are tolerated. They need to better enforce rules about therapeutic communication.

    Advice to Management

Continue offering opportunities for growth & advancement. Reconsider limit on per diem hours and overall staff pay scales.

    Pros

Some days are easy, school days shorter, hours consistent and off by 4

    Cons

Must be prepared for anything to happen (eg. assault, violent episodes, yelling)

    Advice to Management

Have regular team building exercises and meetings to decrease conflict among co-workers when they are already working in an otherwise stressful environment! Also, be a leader when that is your job, and properly manage your employees!
