If You Love Psychiatry, You'd Be Crazy Not to Work Here!

I worked at Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Sheppard Pratt (Towson Campus) has a wide variety of patient units, from Child to Geriatric, from Affective Disorders to Psychotic Disorders, from Eating Disorders to Addiction issues. The hospital is well-managed; benefits are generous; pay is about average, but the benefits package more than makes up for this. Nurses are appreciated; Mental Health Workers are kept very busy. Sheppard Pratt has a very comprehensive Residency program for doctors -- Residents get a very thorough education if they can survive the four years of training. The majority of Attending Psychiatrists are highly experienced. The Department of Medicine is adequate. The ECT program is well-run, well-staffed and produces excellent results for patients.

    Cons

Because of fairly recent health laws and regulations, Sheppard Pratt can be a dangerous place to work due to the patient populations it is obligated to accept. However, during staff orientation and recurring throughout one's career at Sheppard, staff receives training on how to handle difficult situations. Unfortunately, due to recent budget constraints, the hospital has been forced to trim its Department of Education. Additionally, there is a pervasive in-house philosophy (the "Sheppard Way") such that change in policy/procedure does not come easily, despite well-meaning, well-intentioned staff suggestions and this can be frustrating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advice would be that Management attempt to improve on nurturing its highly-skilled nurses, mental health workers, social workers and ancillary staff in a concerted effort to retain these excellent employees.

I have been working at Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital

    Pros

I would say this place is only good if you are specifically in the fields of psychiatry (esp. MD), afterwards it's just a job.

    Cons

Not a place for young ambitious employees, the people, especially senior staff are very pretentious and snobby. Low-pay is the standard, and is well known. No motivation to fix the system.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to start operating like other companies if the organization intends to survive in the near future. When the economic issues of today, I don't see how this is possible, without dramatic change.

    Pros

Famous in the fields of psychiatry with a long history of psychiatric treatment. I would say this is the best place to go if you sick (but that's it).

    Cons

    - stingy in salaries and pay. Rather let a senior employee go elsewhere than increase salary.
    - incompetent management.
    - IT department dosen't seem to have the proper knowledge/tools to do their job.
    - politics seem to be the methods to rise above
    - no reward system for good work, efforts go unpraised.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take consideration for all employees regardless of position and class. Listen to employee problems and take proactive steps in dealing wtih conflict.

    Pros

One of the few last psychiatric hosptials you can work at in this country. A place of history going back to the mid 1800's

    Cons

Medical insurance plans are quite poor considering this is a medical hospital!!!!! Pay is below average. Management seems to consist of a tightly knitt group of people with their friends/relatives none of which are qualified to perform any type of work let alone management. If you are not in the "club" you will find yourself in a rut and might as well leave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Positions need to be re-evaluated and restructured to include more relavant work. Pay needs to be competative in the current market.

I worked at Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital

    Pros

I guess the only advantages are the peaceful setting. Free parking, quiet kind of secluded area. Better and less stressful then a bustling city.

    Cons

There is a "unwritten" culture of docs holding power over everything, even management. It gets to the point where they involve themselves in areas they know absolutley nothing about. It's hard if you are support staff, working in the area. Commonly staff members are embarassed, belittled and harassed in front of people (even when they are right). A doc wil over-ride a manager right in the room with you and no one can do anything about it!!!!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There needs to be a restructuring of this organization. Everybody needs to be treated with the same degree of respect as everyone else. Regardless of title/status....

    Pros

First job in a hospital, it has some advantages, if that is your thing

    Cons

There is a omniscient behavior observed by very senior staff and nurses, MDs are never questioned, if you open your mouth be prepared with your job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Sensitivity training

    Pros

It's a job, but not someplace I would want to work long-term.

    Cons

Very different enviroment, feels like the 1940's. The comments about poor treatment are generally true. They may treat patients well, but for employees that's a differnet matter. It's quite surprising considering this is a mental health organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Increase pay across the board.

I worked at Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital

    Pros

Easy-job if you just want a job, not a career. Good as a stepping stone, fresh out of H.S. or college. Supposed to be the best in it's field.

    Cons

An distrustful environment of ladder climbers, back-stabbers and incompetent employees. Many of these "problem makers" have been there for 10-30 years. Lay-offs have been occurring for the past 4-years. Low-salary is understood.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Ongoing training, education, and review of managers' job performances;
Implement some system of professional review and accountability of doctors with regard to how they comport themselves with patients and fellow staff.
