Only success metric is how many boxes go out door.

I worked at Shimadzu Scientific Instruments full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Actual Field staff are great. That is -the ones that actually go out in field every day.

    Cons

HQ staff in dire need of middle management turnover and influx of 'new blood' as HQ culture is stagnant and 'career lifers' are dug in like a Lyme ticks. So... culture is one that encourages management to not take responsibility for anything and be consummate responsibility dodgers. That is: people who don't do anything don't get blamed for anything. Amazing how people with the least to offer are rewarded the most here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please get rid of all middle management (dead wood) with more than 15 years in. They are only concerned with keeping their own jobs than what is best for company and promote a culture of stagnation. I have seen at least six very good people leave the company because of a single misanthropic middle manager with more than twenty five years in trying to protect his job. When the people under him wise up and start talking about how bad he is he is creative in ways to get rid of them.

    Pros

I was a field sales rep, and they leave you alone to do your job, mostly. Very good people to work with. Good tech support at local level. Nice company cars. Very stable compared with competitors. Decent commission plan. Overall it's a good company and I enjoyed working there.

    Cons

Reps cover too allproduct lines, so you are a jack of all trades and master of none. They desperately want to be a market leader in LCMS but customers will never see them in that light. Managers are "yes" men, don't want to hear negative information, and in many cases are more worried about their own budget than customer satisfaction. Marketing people are overworked and underpaid. Hard to customize products for US market because most of the business is in Asia. Sr. Reps have cream puff territories.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay marketing people more and hire more of them. Be truly committed to customer satisfaction. Have reps cover fewer products and larger territories. Make Sr. Reps earn their keep.

I have been working at Shimadzu Scientific Instruments

    Pros

Too few to even mention but I'll try.
Freedom to make your own schedule within limits.
Almost like working for your self.

    Cons

    Worst Management I've ever seen!
Good Old Boy Network in place.
Japanese treat American employees very poorly!
Corporate culture is engranined with favortism and backstabbing.
No praise for work well done.
    Retaliatory mindset amongst management.
Overall a very disfunctional company to work for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to take a very close look at how they operate and decide if they are doing the right thing.
