Low pay, micro-management, no hours to get stuff done, and help customers.

Keyholder (Former Employee)
Philadelphia, PA

I worked at Shoe Show full-time for less than a year

ProsDealing with customers, fun environment

ConsTechnology dated back to the 80's, home office wants control over everything in the store, lack of communication, lot of things expected to be done with little to no hours allotted to stores to complete tasks.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow the store managers to manage the stores.

Difficult, at best

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Shoe Show full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGood salary, good job security, good employees

ConsUnfair workplace, judged by others gossip with your supervisor, little to no chance of advancement, middle management treats employees like children, women especially treated unfair,

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't allow middle management to treat employees with such disrespect. Create a positive work environment for all employees.

It's a job... Barely (warehouse in concord, nc)

Warehouse (Current Employee)
Concord, NC

I have been working at Shoe Show full-time for more than a year

ProsSteady pay, decent weekends, not much else I can say, the place sucks you in and kills your dreams. They pay you just enough to get you to stay

ConsNot much pay, treated like crap, horrible benefits, greedy management, favoritism, reverse discrimination, full time hours suck (30-33 per week), management is insanely inept, the hard workers are treated like crap, laziness is rewarded, hires a lot of foreigners instead of natural born citizens, to be a Christian company they're far from it, no room to advance through hard work and determination

Advice to Senior ManagementReally go in and evaluate the folks you have managing your warehouse. There's a reason for the ridiculous turnover rate

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

This place is awful

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Shoe Show

ProsThe good people you meet while working here. They are the only ones that help you keep your sanity long enough to endure the bs you deal with.

ConsOoh where do I begin? I have worked for this company for over 10 years and have nothing to show for it. I was at a higher position but voluntarily stepped down for personal reasons and because of that I of course took a pay cut. Even though I have been at my store longer than any other current employee at that location, I was dropped down to minimum wage. On top of that my work hours are so low that my paycheck doesn't even come to $100. I have been denied any extra hours because my sales aren't good enough. I admit I am terrible at selling, but I will do whatever I can to help a customer. I have been thanked numerous times by customers just for doing what I am supposed to do. Commission is a joke. Unless you have an extremely productive day or you steal or cheat personal sales, then most likely you are not going to make commission. If you don't make commission, then you don't get hours. So is the lesson here cheat and steal so you get more money?? I certainly hope not. I have gladly helped out my co-workers in getting certain things done, but now that I am just a sales associate I am no longer allowed to do these things. I feel like I am being treated as if I know nothing about the store. I have bent over backwars for this company but because I needed a little time for my family (which is a hell of a lot more important than this place), I get slapped in the face. I can not wait until I find another job and can finally leave this company. So many years of my life have been wasted here.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake away the commission completely. This isn't the 1950's. Customers don't always want you right there next to them. They just want to know someone is there and willing to help them when and if they need it. I have been given the "thank ou for directing me to the doright area, now go away so I can shop" look more times than you could even imagine. Which of course, usually ends up with a sale going to the House. We can't force a customer to let us help them.

Company is very Old fashioned

Sales Associate (Current Employee)

I have been working at Shoe Show part-time

ProsFlexible Schedule, Easy, good job for someone going to school

ConsLow Pay, No training, sales associates cheat commission , everything is old fashioned..associates don't even have the option of getting direct deposit they only offer paper checks which are issued on Saturday's. Management has to key in the hours for all the hours worked by everyone at the end of the night which takes time and mistakes can be made we do clock in on the computer but they don't even go by that, they use a sign in sheet to record our times and then at the end of the night it is entered in the system..very old school. Also we have to spend time folding journal tape at the end of the night ,I don't even know of any places that use journal tape anymore and we have to take our own deposits to the bank late at night after the store closes..to me that is a safety issue but whatever. They do not give raises they don't don't do reviews they will just tell you to sell more and that's how you will make more per hour, but what they don't tell you is your commission is averaged into your hours worked for the week so one day you may have done really well and made commission and the next few days it was slow and you didn't so you don't make any extra money, plus you have associates who just say they helped someone and they really didn't and they get the sale and steal commission and nothing is ever done about it and then you have people who are honest and hardworking and barley every make commission bc they clean and do other tasks

Advice to Senior Managementneed to get with the current times, like have direct deposit and a real clock in system instead of a sign in sheet, newer POS system etc

The most inadequate introduction to retail management possible.

Keyholder (Former Employee)

I worked at Shoe Show full-time for more than a year

ProsYou CAN make a lot of money during busy times, if you have the right crew, they can be like family (which is awesome, because if you plan on being anything but a sales associate, you won't be seeing much of your actual family), and sometimes if you catch their corporate office in a good mood, they can be very helpful product-wise.

ConsTons! As just a keyholder, I was carrying out management duties more often than what anyone getting paid as little as I was should be comfortable doing. I was with the company for a year and I was supposed to receive a 25 cent "raise" but was instead essentially tricked into a 20 cent raise. This, and many other things, such as the district manager allowing employees and even non-employees to work "off the clock" to meet styling update goals and to keep the store clean (honestly, the unbelievably messy customers and the very little coverage we were allowed to help pick it all up was a big part of why I left), proved to me that this company isn't about its customers or employees. It is only about making and saving as much money as possible and if it means saving five cents, they will NOT hesitate to walk all over anyone and everyone. My best advice is to just not go in ready to take this place seriously, because you will get taken advantage of.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork on your business ethics.
