I have been working at Shopatron full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

San Luis Obispo is of course beautiful. But also Shopatron is an exciting place to work with enthusiastic and talented people who are inspiring to be around. Good company culture and awareness of work life balance.

    Cons

In comparison to tech companies in silicon valley the pay may not be as competitive. But I feel that is made up for in other areas. Definitely should not be a deterrent and is something that is probably negotiable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work! We are all in this together and I admire all of you.

I worked at Shopatron full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The culture there is great. What I loved best about my job was my colleagues. It was always a pleasure to work with the people in my department and other departments. I received decent training which allowed me to move up in my career with another SaaS company in California. On another note, the product that Shopatron sells is a fantastic product that is an industry innovation which makes the company a leader in its space.

    Cons

The management of the company as a whole is lacking in vision and sustainability. Their HR department is incompetent and was a struggle to work with from the beginning. The company grew much too rapidly in 2013 and 2014 and at the end of 2014 they laid of a significant portion of their staff. It was terrible to watch passionate, competent, well trained employees walk out the door to take their skill-sets to other companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The board of directors, CEO and department managers should really evaluate the direction of the company to decide how they will continue to be competitive in a world market. There is big competition in their space, and they have made no significant gains in the past decade. Similar companies that are offering a similar service are making leaps and bounds moving forward. If Shopatron wants to remain relevant, they need to evaluate their culture, employee retention, and business cycle, or they will continue to struggle in the years to come.

    Pros

Gap filler until I found a better job.

    Cons

This place is terrible. Depressing corporate atmosphere and horrific company culture. Unrealistic deadline expectations. CEO and VPs micromanage areas beyond their own expertise. They're mostly skating by on a few big name clients, but I fail to see how they will expand their business with the model and management currently in place. Just trust me when I say YOU DO NOT WANT TO WORK HERE.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

CEO needs to step down and hire upper management who can overhaul... well, pretty much everything. From office culture to business model. It's all bad.

I have been working at Shopatron full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

As with many companies work-life balance can be as balanced as you want it to be. Depending on your department and responsibilities (and your own work habits), there's great flexibility for you to choose how you spend your time in the office. Some people come in early and leave early, some people come in late and stay late to make sure work is done.

One of the best things about Shopatron is the strong unspoken culture around health and fitness. Many Shopatroners have standing desks and there's a road biking club, sports club, paddle club... Probably the best and most participated is the Strength and Conditioning / Crossfit club, which works out 3 times a week out on the front lawn. It's a fantastic atmosphere to get outside with the co-workers from different departments to encourage and push each other. If you are committed (and many Shopatroners are) you'll notice a real physical and emotional difference. This is great for when work-load ramps up and you know that you're able to stay fit and happy.

    Cons

Not necessarily a "con", but there's not a whole lot of flashy Silicon Valley perks here, as in free catered lunches, kegs, etc. However on special occasions (i.e. birthdays, company rallies, anniversaries) the company will order in some good food. Historically Shopatron has been a very "capital-efficient" company, as Ed puts it. Still it wouldn't hurt to treat employees to more perks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please make sure employees continue to stay happy!

    Pros

    - Helps to support living on the beautiful Central Coast.
    - There are still some fun, interesting people there, but they seem to be dwindling.

    Cons

    - Uncompetitive product.
    - Poor culture - lots of drama, revolving middle management, fire happy upper management.
    - Poor management and disconnected, yet micromanaging CEO.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are so many good examples of how to run a successful tech company just 3 hours north or south of you - you compete in a global market place and need to better emulate best practices in the ecommerce space and not just make excuses.

I have been working at Shopatron full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The work environment was good and almost everyone was nice. The pay is pretty decent for the area but depending on which department, your pay most definitely doesnt equal your workload. They have cross fit classes 3 days a week. Yoga 1 day a week and biking club 2 days a week.

    Cons

Almost every department is over worked and underpaid. The communication between departments is horrible. The VPs are lazy. Too many Cheifs and not nearly enough Indians. You will often get..."that's not my job" from other employees. So if you're new, good luck on learning the system the best way you know how and figuring out a solution to your issue by going to several different people or simply on your own. Also, if your too good in your position and want to move up or on to another department or position...good luck! Often times, if your'e too good or they simply like you in the position you're already in, you will be stuck!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider a department lead, this should help especially with customer service as they have to deal with all the crazy calls coming in. There are just too many people with little to no time to take care of issues. Also, the follow up with clients are horrible. There are a few 'Managers" that need to be tested on what is done within their department and your product. Some of these managers do little to nothing and leave the help or training to people within their department, then get upset when they have to actually do something. Also, the ticket system within the company is horrible. You put in a problem ticket for it to be unsolved and closed and then another ticket to be created and transferred to someone else?? Maybe its not the ticket system but too many departments to handle little issues. Oh, and 1 last thing...if you have someone that is great at their job and wants to move up...allow them that opportunity! Just because they're great in that one position doesn't mean they should be stuck in it. Instead of them staying in that position, you'll soon find their letter of resignation.

-You can move into other roles that interest you more after you put in enough time

    -Great location

    Cons

I worked at Shopatron as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

One of the few tech companies in SLO.

    Cons

CEO is unable to confront hard facts. Board is composed of his buddies, who suffer from group think. Technology is sub-par compared with a growing roster of competitors. Insufficient funding/revenue is slowing innovation, since rival startups have been snatched up by companies with deeper pockets.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Replace the CEO. Shake up the board. Focus solely on TRYING to keep existing customers, while accelerating product innovation by hiring more experienced engineers. Fix your transaction-based model and forget the freemium approach -- it won't work. Companies don't want to tether themselves -- even for free -- to a company with an uncertain future that lacks industry-leading technology. Get acquired, fast!

I worked at Shopatron full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

-There are definitely some good, intelligent people working here
-Cool product with a lot of potential to succeed under proper management and direction
-Clubs at lunch and after work: yoga, strength and conditioning training, paddle boarding, etc.
-Good health benefits and PTO (15 vacation days, 5 sick days, 6 holidays and 2 floating holidays)

    Cons

-Poor senior management, many were handed positions without having the experience necessary to propel the company in a positive direction (in terms of both business and company culture)
-Awful amount of internal gossip, among both employees and management
-Cutthroat, lack of integrity (sparing some details here for the sake of people's confidentiality)
-Office has a dreary, depressing corporate feel. Just rows of gray cubicles. You'll definitely be needing those PTO days!
-The corporate marketing department lacks defined direction and goals. Recent staffing turnover has really hurt the marketing efforts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Replace inexperienced management, be more proactive with developing the public face of the company (i.e. marketing and branding), stop facilitating negative gossip and actually live by the company's core values. The CEO micro-manages, rather than trusting the people he hires to do what they're good at. Also, when I was there, the head of my department explicitly asked the team to write good Glassdoor reviews (if you're wondering where the sudden surge of positive reviews came from).
