Pros
Though tedious, work is often simple and easy; flexible scheduling as long as there's comfort with the weekend requirements; most coworkers are easy to get along with; respectable pay rate for high school or college level work
Cons
High turnover amongst high school part-timers leads to Machiavellian store managers; union raises and benefits are becoming increasingly impossible to acquire; company connections are a necessity for anybody seeking managerial training
Advice to Senior Management
Hire or train 21st century managers; institute new policies for dealing with delinquent staff so that the whole department/store doesn't suffer
Pros
Great pay for some people.
Cons
Bad Pay for some people
Advice to Senior Management
Pay Differently
Pros
It was a very easy job, not too difficult. The hours are flexible and they work with your schedule. Get long breaks
Cons
There are a lot of angry customers. You are standing for long amounts of times. I never got a raise working here
Advice to Senior Management
It would be good to give more perks to employees and they would most likely be happier to work there and give better service to customers
Pros
Everyone who works there except for a few of the managers are great to work with. Customer interaction is probably the only thing I would consider fun about the job.
Cons
Front end management is incompetent. Very poor communication and lack of respect for the employees. Pay is just above minimum wage.
Advice to Senior Management
Treat employees with more respect. Work on communication skills. Don't talk down to employees for the smallest of mistakes. Give more incentive for doing a good job.
Pros
Fun, nothing too stressful. Pretty simple job, with no big tasks to complete. People are great to work with at the shop.
Cons
Some of the customers are not very kind. Some of the management doesn't always seem as educated as they should be.
Advice to Senior Management
They need to listen to the people who work for them, even if they are lower employees, because they are the ones doing the dirty work, and see things every day.
Pros
Good way of making money if your a teenager
Cons
Not a place to start a career
Advice to Senior Management
Hire competent workers
Pros
It is very easy to balance your schedule working with shoprite, since there are a large number of employees. As long as you do what your expected to do, management should be happy about your performance. Customers tend to be very rude at times depending which are you work for, however as long as you do your job everything is ok. Also the union works with you whenever you have a problem.
Cons
People come and go all the time. It is also difficult to move up. When working for a privately owned Shoprite family and friends are the ones who get the management positions. Also, they are more stringent with pay and full time workers were replaced with partimers who earned less. When the one i worked at was corporate full time workers with higher wages worked there.
Advice to Senior Management
remember, full time workers care more than part timers, one full time worker will do a better job then two 4 hour part timers.
Pros
fun employees, good music...sometimes, managers are nice and thoughtful...sometimes, usually enough employees so that your never insanely swamped with customers. good pay for a highschool student.
Cons
where do i start?
- downright mean managers (we had 3)
- horrible hours (3 pm-11:30 pm on a school night!)
- very dirty work areas
-rude customers
- have to call a manager if you buy something there
- not allowed to ring up relatives/friends
Advice to Senior Management
start treating your employees like people, and not work drones. realize that if am employee is sick for more than a day that they may not have gone to the doctor and dosent have a doctors note and get fired (like me)
Pros
Union job, good benefits, a lot of hours available to work if desired, and the ability to make decent money.
Cons
Upper/middle management was not very competent, and owner was never happy with anything. Most of the co-workers are horrible to deal with on a daily basis and consistently have petty arguments with each other. Also, it's retail...so you have to deal with unhappy customers, which is part of the job, but doesn't make you look forward to going to work.
Advice to Senior Management
Allow department managers to run their department with less interference from upper management, and have middle managers actually know what they are talking about and understand the jobs of the departments they manage to create a better atmosphere. Also, have HR do a better job of hiring people that actually want to do the job and have passion for what they are doing.
Pros
-Easy, flexible, busy, smiley happy place to work
Cons
-Too busy, rude customers, horrible organization
