I have been working at ShoreTel full-time

    Pros

Work on the latest and greatest communications technologies! Culture is great, everyone in engineering wants to create the best product! Challenging and fulfilling work. Benefits are excellent. Just added 401k matching too.

    Cons

Sub-par compensation, working in Austin or remote lowers your visibility significantly, it's common belief among management that promotions should be based on years of experience rather than merit

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Compensation should be based on work load and merit. Don't let product management design products autonomously there's a lot of experience in engineering that have personally handled customer complaints for years and know what they want.

I have been working at ShoreTel

    Pros

ShoreTel is a very nimble company to work for and everyone works hard to achieve common goals! Together, we all win!

    Cons

Sometime it is hard to be noticed since everyone else is working just as hard & smart as you are! It's like going to school where everyone is aiming for a 5.0 GPA

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote based on merit and what the employee has done for the company behind the scenes and accolades.

I have been working at ShoreTel full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Do some fun things like battle of the bands. Reasonable work. Fairly good vacation benefit for USA.

    Cons

At this point, we don't have the environment of a big successful company with all their perks nor the chance for big success as a new start-up. Market/technology is mature. Lack 401K match (though they're adding it in near future, but it will be very limited).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Complete effort to have one platform. Find some way to get some growth going. Acquisitions? What will it take to grow at 20-30% a year rather than 10%?

I have been working at ShoreTel full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The product really does work. Yes, there are some things that have gone wrong in the latest software releases but we've been accustomed to years of things working so smoothly that we get antsy when some software issues crop up. We need to take a step back and consider what it's like at other competitors in our field to see how good we are. Management stays out of my business as long as I'm making my numbers. And customers really do like our stuff, making you feel good about what you're doing everyday.

    Cons

The above mentioned software issues are far too frequent given how much QA focus we're told we've had lately. Compensation here for Sales is not as good as it was several years ago. Commissions in particular. More work for less pay. The work life balance is the only thing that makes up for that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The product is being totally refreshed in 2015. The company is betting the farm on that. Don't screw it up! If we get it right we have a bright future to increase market share in an increasing market. But it isn't easy to re-engineer the entire product into something unique in the marketplace. If we get it wrong the company will be sold at a discount to one of our competitors and all the great things we did here will fade into history.
