Shutterfly: You'll work hard and never get ahead, but the benefits are decent

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Redwood City, CA

ProsShutterfly attracts high-caliber talent -- you'll always be surrounded by great co-workers. They make excellent, best-in-class products. The company operations are managed responsibly and thoughtfully. Shutterfly gives back to the community. The benefits and perks are good, compared to other similar companies. Corporate HQ is centrally located for an OK commute from most places in the Bay Area.

ConsThe executive team does not always see eye-to-eye on company strategies, and has been shuffled a good deal in recent years. Cross-departmental communication and cooperation is a definite challenge. Turnover is above-average. Expect a working environment that fosters long-hours, high-stress, and too many unproductive meetings.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe organization seems extremely top-heavy, or bottom-light -- depending on your point of view. Directors and Executives seem to spend too much time in the weeds, and don't get to focus on strategy, while Managers and Associates struggle just to get work done every day between way too many meetings. Cross-functional communication and workflow issues are a huge barrier to success -- consider building smaller teams with members from multiple departments to execute on smaller, faster projects. And staff up accordingly. Finally, focus on stability in the executive leadership and a truly unified vision.

Design (Current Employee) Redwood City, CA

ProsWonderful products, therefore lots of customer love
Feel good about what you are adding to the world
Very smart, creative people, easy to get along with
Individual contributors get to drive decisions

ConsIt is a smallish company, in some departments, there is not much room to move up or sideways
Smallish product portfolio, work and challenges can become repetitive

Advice to Senior ManagementSupport new ideas to innovate, differentiate and compete against both established competition and novel startups
Take risks to avoid becoming a look alike of the competition

Great place to be if you are patient and entrepreneurial

Manager - Marketing (Current Employee) Redwood City, CA

ProsFantastic brand name, innovative growing company, people who know Shutterfly, love Shutterfly. Great reputation by customers. If you have the right personality, you can do great there. Shutterfly HR does an amazing job of growing a family within Shutterfly. A director here is equal to a VP role at most companies and they pay accordingly.

ConsThese could be cons depending on how you perceive them. To others they may be pros. 1. Still operates like a small start up company with no real processes, so things can get confusing. 2. Other than the product, most parts of marketing are not very innovative. 3. There is 0 onboarding, you have to be a go getter. If you can break through and get past all that - it's great! It takes more than a smart person with a lot of experience to work at Shutterfly. 4. You have to have major politics skills and be ok with dealing with it. It takes a mountain to move a molehill. 5. There is not much leadership from the C levels, you have to find things out on your own and be proactive.

Advice to Senior ManagementC level management needs to be more active and involved, getting hands dirty every once in a while.

    Good place to work

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Redwood City, CA

ProsVery informal working environment (e.g. not a dress for success place). Limited politics. Fairly open "open-door" policy. Emphasis is on resolving the issue @ the root cause, not just pointing fingers. Flexible mind-set - limited bureaucracy.

ConsThis is not a $1b+ company with global operations and all of the various issues that one can learn from a $1b+ company. Sometimes best practice processes are not followed.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to engage employees @ all levels, even if they appear "sefl-sufficient"

    Shutterfly Review

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Redwood City, CA

ProsWork/life balance is important at Shutterfly, open communication with executive staff, opportunity to work on a variety of projects, and happy people at Shutterfly.

ConsPay and benefits could be more competitive, career growth is slow, planning is slow, sometimes the company acts as a scrappy startup.

Advice to Senior ManagementAll of executive staff should act in a more visionary/inspirational role (similar to Jeff), give more direct/critical feedback to teams throughout the year vs waiting for quarterly reviews, do more to motivate teams.

    Great place to work!

Senior Product Manager (Current Employee) Redwood City, CA

ProsShutterfly is a great place to work. Everyone here is very smart, very nice, and very good at what they do. Upper management is fairly clear in their directives, and everyone generally seems to be on the same page about what direction we are heading. The work-life balance here is one of the best I've ever encountered - while expectations are high and everyone wants to do their best, everyone also understands that there is a time to relax and have fun, both with co-workers and with your own families.

ConsThis is a fairly "flat" organization, and there are not a lot of opportunities for career advancement. Additionally, the quarterly review system is a bit flawed in that it allows for reviews only of an employee by a manager - while the employee contributes heavily to the review process, there is no opportunity for peer reviews, nor is there any opportunity for the employee to give feedback on the manager.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive all employees the opportunity to review their manager, and to review and be reviewed by their peers. Continue to offer the great team building opportunities that you currently offer, education opportunities that you offer, and keep encouraging people to perform at high levels.

A good place to learn, but not so hot for a long-term career

Engineer (Current Employee) Redwood City, CA

    ProsFun products.
    Young and dynamic corporate culture.
Chance to learn Web 2.0 methodologies.
Located in sunny Northern California - a great place to live.
Free and discounted photo gifts - good if you take lots of photos.
    Free drinks, cheap snacks.

ConsMediocre benefits package - average salaries, weak bonus scheme, and no 401K match.
Career advancement plans / goals are left to the employees to figure out. Management does not offer any advice or encouragement in this area, other than "do it yourself".

Advice to Senior ManagementStrengthen the benefits package, especially the bonus scheme, and start to match 401K contributions.
Create a work culture that offers a clear path for employees to learn and take on more responsibilties, rather than expecting them to figure it out all on their own.

I enjoy going to work each day.

Manager (Current Employee) Redwood City, CA

ProsI really liked most of the people. The products are great and the little perks like promo codes, free drinks and discounted snacks are nice. Company wide meetings are held every quarter and over attempts at communication is good.

ConsCan get to be political. If you are on the wrong side, or don't have the right "friends", it can be hard to advance. Some depts have a lot of turnover and there are limited consequences for repeated mistakes which creates a lack of ownership and responsibility for you work.

Advice to Senior Managementit is not all about the new employees, don't forget your more senior ones who have helped you reached the status you are at today

    Revolving door

Senior Marketing Manager (Former Employee) Redwood City, CA

ProsGenerally nice people, free drinks, and they bring in lots of lunches.

ConsSenior Management consistently tolerates poor treatment of employees with little to no recourse. In one case, it took all of one Director's direct reports to quit before they finally fired that Director. On the other hand, they pushed out a Director who was very strong in her role. In that case, her direct reports resigned. Sub-par analytics and reporting infrastructure.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay more attention to how your employees are treated. Get outside consulting help to recalibrate what backgrounds/skill sets are important in Director and above roles.
