I have been working at Sickkids as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Everyone is friendly, the atmosphere is always positive. There is always something going on at the hospital to keep you engaged. Work-life balance is amazing and so are the benefits.

    Cons

While the culture of the hospital itself was amazing, the culture in the specific office I worked at could have been better. Everyone kept to themselves. They were friendly when approached. The office was always quiet.

    Recommends

    Pros

Large teaching hospital with significant, cutting edge research. New research facility with great working spaces.

    Cons

The bureaucracy associated due to the size and complexity of having clinical, teaching, and research objectives results in inconveniences. New research building not designed with researchers' needs in mind.

I have been working at Sickkids

    Pros

The atmosphere was positive, with a good community of scientists, collaboration, and discussion. The new research tower is adequate and accessible.

    Cons

Funding is hard to come by. The in-house foundation grant seems to vary substantially from year to year, and the only other option for a post-doc grant was CIHR funding, which is also highly competitive.

I have been working at Sickkids full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

People are really engaged with patient experience and outcomes.

    Cons

There's a lot of people who have been there too long and are waiting to retire. They are a great source of experience/knowledge but there's not an efficient process for succession, so the knowledge is lost -- and it's patients and staff who end up paying in the end. There needs to be a better way for the organization to support building capacity through learning.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move towards standardizing processes and provide transparency on how people can advance and/or learn in their role. There needs to be more oversight on project management so that we can decrease waste. There is a significant IT issue. Systems such as Electronic records need to be integrated and/or one solution for continuity, but more importantly for safety. If systems are standalone, we are really not providing a quality standard of care.

    I worked at Sickkids

    Pros

Availability of multi-disciplinary scientific expertise (allows for collaborations and access to unique technologies/equipment)
Proximity to other research institutes (University Health Network, University of Toronto)

    Cons

Working in a hospital can be trying, particularly a children's hospital, where you see many young children suffering from various severe diseases.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to better engage clinical and academic staff to collaborate on research for translational applications
