Former Employee - Gas Turbine Engineer in Charlotte, NC

I worked at Siemens Energy full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There are some pros. You get to do some international travel. You get to work close to the hardware you're actually working on. Salary is very fair. Would be an okay place to do manufacturing or manufacturing engineering.

    Cons

Very frustrating place to work as a design engineer for gas turbines. Sloppy engineering abounds. Design decisions are made based on corporate politics, not on what's best for the company or for the engine. Culture of poor quality. Career opportunities in Charlotte are very limited.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Discontinue the old product lines which no longer work. Take design decision authority away from project managers. Stop letting schedule trump quality. Institute chief engineers, as is common in other industries and other companies.

I have been working at Siemens Energy full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Laid back culture, Diversity, ok pay, helps if you have a German surname..

    Cons

Management silos, redundancy, process oriented (hindrance at times), laid back, no sense of urgency.. Managers don't move around or take up new challenges - stay in a single position - no room for growth for lower level employees unless they move to a different organization. This is prevalent in Orlando..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers have to be leaders, currently they aren't setting a good example!

I have been working at Siemens Energy

    Pros

    Stable industry
    Company has a good reputation
    The pay is very good
Starting vacation is very good compared with other companies
Young energetic workforce combined with seasoned and experience employees

    Cons

    At times extremely busy
Can be a high stress work environment
50+ hour work weeks are not uncommon (but salaried employees are paid straight time)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a more direct link between bonuses and profits. Continue to encourage exploration of new technologies and processes. Let engineering drive decisions instead of accounting.

I have been working at Siemens Energy

    Pros

Company pays its employees well and provides them with essentials needed to get the job done some of the time.

    Cons

Company is disorganized and the training is not very helpful. The motto around here is " The Siemens way is to learn it on your own". Not a good motto to me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay close attention and when your employees needs advice or information on how to get something done, then take time out to help.
