I worked at Siemens Medical Solutions Health Services full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

As the title indicates, the people at Siemens Medical (now Cerner) are the best. The workforce was mainly mid-career professionals and with that came a level of maturity that made it a pleasure to go to work everyday.

    Cons

The strategic direction of the company (European-based) seemed to be in conflict with the US-based divisions. The cannabalization started in 2012 when we learned that 25% of the workforce from our department now needed to be India-based (Bangalore). In 2013, that number increased to 50%. In 2014, Siemens Medical - what was once a wonderful place to work, was sold to Cerner. Hopefully Cerner will provide that positive workplace environment again.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We understand there's a commitment to shareholders, but the move to cheaper labor from Bangalore led to poor customer and product support. Not sure where the balance is (or was), but the effort to save a buck cost many of us our jobs - with many of us still trying to recover.

    Pros

Great pay and benefits, great products

    Cons

Complete lack of oversight or management. Managers (x two in a row) completely disconnected from field employees and seemingly uninterested in work process or production.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop paying your senior managers salaries completely focused on closing deals. this would help you weed out underperformers much more quickly. 250K plus is a lot of money to pay to a VP level manager that their underlings cant find on the phone or email more than once a week if they are lucky

This is what happens when management stagnates, process dictates and no one innovates.

    Pros

If you're part of the clique who used to be at Shared Medical Systems you'll probably survive, protected by your old buddies, until this place crumbles to the ground.

    Cons

The software strategy was outdated, the management philosophy was "as long as I keep my nice office and fat salary everything is just great." The software that these people write is responsible for the health of human beings! And their implementation processes are awful! Quality had disintegrated to the point where they thought they were doing a great job if they made sure that everyone was using the right version of their document templates. People lost their jobs for not fitting into the culture of CYA and don't upset anyone in power. There were so many intermarriages, so many parents getting jobs for their kids, so much nepotistic favoritism in place that competence to perform a job was 4th on the list to be hired internally subsequent to who the candidate knows, who they're related to, how long they've been in a related job and how much they'll whine if they don't get the promotion that everyone there clearly deserves because they're all top performers who are entitled to more... it's simply nauseating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The new owners (talking to you here Cerner) have a lot of dead weight to clear out but you're dealing with executives who are experts at scapegoating and off-loading accountability for failure. The last 4 people standing will be a VP with one Director reporting to him with one manager reporting to her with one employee reporting to him and they'll all be related to each other. Pull the trigger.

    Pros

I have no pros for this company.

    Cons

Extremely bad management. Very poor software development. Work retaliation allowed on employees for doing the right thing. HR is standoffish and unreachable. Very archaic technology. Ignorant of the current needs of the healthcare industry which produces poor quality products.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Resign and allow the new competitor to take over. It would be best for all.
